Shopping in KL

An August 2004 trip to Kuala Lumpur by S.L.Hii

Kuala Lumpur is a great place for shopping and dining if one does not mind the terrible traffic and bustling crowds.

Overview

KL is a great place for a business trip or shopping. However, traveling is frustrating with its bumper-to-bumper traffic and dishonest taxi drivers who do not want to use the meter.

Quick Tips:

Call the Taxi centers if the taxis at the stands refuse to use metres (taxi Center: 03-90575757) to book a taxi.

Best Way To Get Around:

Monorail, walk, taxi.

Hotel

The lobby is furnished with a modern sofa, like a love seat I think, and very modern furniture. Since I arrived quite late, my room was upgraded to a deluxe, which I found to be very worth the value since the rate is only US$24, which includes breakfast (very limited buffet line with foods like eggs, fried Mee Hoon, bread, and courtesy drinks with coffee or tea).

The room was furnished in a dark colour, which reminds one of an executive office, and a king-sized bed, which was very clean and well facilitated. How can I ask for more?

And the hotel is only a 5-minute walk from the shopping centers. Just outside the hotel, wide selections of food stalls selling local food were the best, as they sold tasty and cheap food, even if the stalls were very crowded.

Attraction | "Where to shop"

Places to shop for a better value and quality:

Sungei Wang - Malaysians knows that Sg. Wang has lots of individual shops selling goods like clothes (branded and non-branded), pirated pc hardware, food, and headphones for a good price. No need to go to Petaling Street to buy cheap quality goods where one has to endure the terrible pollution from the bus stations located nearby. Get ready for the crowds that make one a bit tired to shop, but up for taking a seat at the nearby cafes. It is definitely a good place to buy non-branded woman’s clothes.

One Utama: Is a large shopping complex which consists of Ikea, Pets Shop (with very cute pets like Lion Head Bunnies, Sloppy Ear Bunnies, Golden Retrievers, and others), Jusco and individual shops selling things like clothes, kitchenware, and ornaments. During the weekends, there is a market operating from the afternoon until evening just outside of the complex. The prices of the merchandise are average; not as cheap as in Sg. Wang but definitely reasonable.

Cititel Midvalley: This is a very large shopping complex with four wings. It consists of major supermarkets like Carre Four and Metro Jaya. There are other individual shops like Topshops, Miss Selfridge, Bonita (which sells hair accessories), and various pet shops. Sometimes, when there are sales, you can find a Topshot t-shirt as cheap as RM10. I enjoy shopping here because it has almost everything.

KLCC, Lot10, Starhill, Mines Resort Shopping complex: A shopping complex with brands like Versace and A/X, very high-end places to shop. It is good for browsing though.
