The best part about Cannes is walking around people (and yacht) watching. I was there during Bastille Day, which was highlighted by the "National Fireworks Competition." This was awesone, to say the least. Forget the fancy restaurants - grab a baguette, a hunk of cheese, and a bottle of wine, and you've got it made. The Nice Jazz Festival was also incredible.

Quick Tips:

If you have to worry about money, don't come. But there are some great cheap things to do - the museums are fabulous.

Best Way To Get Around:

The Train!!!!!

I got a room on the top floor with a huge balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Very nice but very old. Getting to the top floor involves getting off the elevator on the floor below, and winding up an old stairway. The price actually was not bad, around $125/night. This is very well located in the middle of everything. A great breakfast came with the room as well, served outside in a garden on a patio.

This is a nice Holiday Inn, and it is very well located. You can walk to the Old Town, to the beach, and to the railroad station. The windows open, and the view of the city is outstanding.

A boat takes you from Cannes to this island. There is a huge monastery here with a nice gift shop. It is guarded by an 11th century fortress, which sits right on the Sea and is very impressive. There are beautiful little chapels all over this wooded island. I was practically all alone, even during high season. The end of my trip was highlighted by a visit to the snack bar. I bought a giant bottle of some very potent beer, whose name has escaped me.

Nice Jazz Festival

Everyone should be required to do this once in their lives! A beautiful, warm French evening, with incredible music. The setting is a park built on Roman ruins, and one stage is even set in an old amphitheater. Matisse's house is nearby. This is where my man James Taylor played - and he did all the great songs. Van Morrison (The Man) did mainly a straight ahead jazz set - no hits. Then he ended with "Gloria" and Bono joined onstage. What a night! I came alone, but I was not lonely for long!

Musee Matisse de Nice

Attraction | "Matisse Museum/Chagall Museum"

Quote:
These wonderful and contrasting galleries are literally up the road from each other. Chagall's is more modern and, of course, contains all of his great Biblical paintings. Also a lot of gorgeous stained glass and a huge mosaic. And it's cheap to enter. Then, walk UP UP UP the hill to Cimiez and you can't miss Matisse's Museum. It is in his old red house in the Roman ruins. Full of his great works, you'll walk through several floors. But boy is it hot in there. Nearby, you can visit the 12th century Cathedral established by St. Francis of Assisi - he visited there. The gardens are just beautiful, and the graveyard next to it contains Matisse's grave. These are within walking distance of the r...Read More
