eating in the city that always sleeps

An August 2004 trip to Evanston by MURMANSK44

In a town without street lights where churches outnumber bars and the dogs have their own beach, eating is one of the few pleasures. Enjoy places like the Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop.

Evanston probably is a nice place to live. Provided you can get around at night without streetlights and your idea of a Saturday night is getting ready for church on Sunday morning. In a town where churches outnumber bars (well the WCTU started here) and where dogs have their own beach, there is not much night life or much life of any kind. Eating, therefore, is one of the few pleasures in town.

The Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop is a great place for Sunday breakfast. The bait selections are limited but the Jambalaya Omlette will eliminate the need for either lunch or dinner. The giant omlete stuffed with cheese and jambalaya plus cajun potatoes, toast and grits could serve three. The "Thick cut French Toast" described as six half slices with maple syrup is what most people would call a whole loaf. Apparently, in Evanston they cut their bread very thick.

The service was prompt and friendly. The establishment was very clean especially considering the rush for Sunday breakfast. And despite the rush there was no rush to get you out of there.

This is the place to watch people and even dogs on their way to the beach.
