Quote: Neuchatel, a city in miniature. I came to Neuchatel in 2003 to study French for a year and I have found that the town is a miniature gem. Architecturally it's heavily influenced by the French connection and you will see some wonderful buildings all over town. The Chateau and collegiate dominate the town visually although in fact neither is really very big. In these pages I will try and give you a taste of what I found here.

Neuchatel is known for its fountains and the lake. In fact you really can't miss either if you visit the town. For me, walks by the lake are a wonderful memory. Even in winter it is nice because it never gets really cold there. I loved visiting the Archeology museum and the viewpoint at Chaumont, but the countryside around is great too.Quick Tips: There is lots to do in the Neuchatel area. In the town itself there are a number of very good museums. Boat trips on the lake are always a nice way of spending an afternoon. There are a several medieval towns not far from Neuchatel which are worth visiting. But don't miss the fountains in Neuchatel itself.Best Way To Get Around: The best wa...Read More

From Place Pury in the centre of Neuchatel town, take the number 1 trolley bus (lin the direction of Marin) to the Latenium bus stop (about 15 minutes). Walk towards the port following the signs and you will come to the history park by the lake. The park is organised to be a time line from pre-historic days to Roman. My all time favourite is the house on stilts, which is a reproduction of what they think houses on the fringes of the lake would have looked like in Stone Age time. Besides it is a section of ground that they removed 1 km when they dug the local motorway. Here you will see three Stone Age hearths and other artifacts as they were found. The museum itself takes you backwards...Read More

Vauseyon Gorge

A hidden treasure on the outskirts of Neuchatel.

Vauseyon gorge has been in use since the Iron Age. Go to the Maison du Prussiens ( a restaurant) and follow the gorge from there. You will find an old mill across the gorge by the hotel and an Edwardian pleasure garden complete with bandstand. Take the path by the side of the hotel (its OK its not private!). The path will take you on a Victorian boardwalk through an old tunnel. If you are 'lucky' the recent rains may provide a flash flood and it will be stupendous! But wear good sensible shoes as the boards are slippery. If you wish you can walk all the way up the gorge to Valangin ... about two hours walk.
