Imperial Luxembourg. Tiny? Yes. Dull? No. Why, lucky? Just look at the beautiful setting! If you're in the vicinity, take the time to visit.

Mercure Luxembourg
We arrived in Luxembourg via train from Bruges, Belgium, and were delighted to find that our hotel was only 200m from the train station - out the front door, and straight down the street, on the right. The Mercure Luxembourg is also only a short walk from the old city.

There’s a bright, welcoming lobby, a small courtyard, and 68 rooms, 24 of which are non-smoking, on five floors. Rooms have TVs, phones, radios, and in-suite bathrooms with a toilet and shower. There is a private garage if you have a rental car, a bar, a lounge, and a small terrace. Breakfast was included and was more than adequate, served in a sunny and cheerful breakfast room.

Only drawback? Our room was off the street and several young men partied, argued, and yelled way into the wee hours before dawn.

Restaurant | "La Fountaine/Le Replay Brasserie"

Located on the main thoroughfare between the Central Rail Station and Old Town, Le Replay Brasserie had a more than adequate menu with both indoor and outdoor dining. It appeared to be a favorite after-work meeting place for locals. A fountain sits on the corner, thus the alternate name of La Fountaine.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame
Approaching from the Casemates near the Obelisk, you'll see Cathédrale Notre-Dame's fountain with five spouting lions. Just inside the entrance of this 1613 Cathedral, you'll see a golden mural of St. Joseph holding Christ, flanked on either side by Abraham and Jacob. Stepping further inside, in addition to lovely stained glass windows, is the fine Baroque organ.

One Lone Guard
One lone guard??? Yep, that's all we saw guarding the Palais Grand Ducal, official residence of the royal family since 1890. This ornate building in the heart of old town is interesting, but more intriquing are the golden faces that face the palace on tall columns. Just around the corner is a monument to the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, by sculptor Jean Cardot, the duchesses hand outstretched in greeting.

Casemates du BockBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Casemates"

Obelisk & Sculpture
The Casemates are underground defense galleries dating from the 17th century. During WWII, Luxembourg residents lived in these underground tunnels.

Guided tours are required. We had an amazing young man as a guide, who rapidly and fluently switched from English to French to German, delighting all with his historical knowledge and quick wit. The tour requires you to be physically fit enough to climb several flights of steep stairs and maneuver on slippery surfaces.

The grounds around the Casemates are beautifully kept. There is a small train tour available through the property as well.
