A March 2004 trip to Zandvoort by flgstffmm

Zandvoort was sparsely populated in early March, a beautiful beach city on the North Sea. There is a train station not far from the NH Zandvoort resort which made travel to Amsterdam easy and pleasant. It snowed lightly in the evenings and temperatures were mostly in the 40s (F).

Hotel

Best Things Nearby:
Across the street from the beach, a short train ride into Amsterdam.

Best Things About the Resort:
Huge bay window/atrium overlooking the North Sea. Closest resot to Amsterdam.

Resort Experience:
We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. This is a hotel, no kitchen or cooking facilities. Furnishings were somewhat simple and sparse but suite was quite spacious. Hotel restaurant was very good, filet mignon was cooked to perfection. Closest resort to Amsterdam which was a short 20 minute train ride away. Convenient for visiting Den Haag, Delft, Harleem, Rotterdam.

Restaurant

Charming and quaint little restaurant located along the main shopping area in the small beach city of Zandvoort. Food was traditional Dutch with German influence, excellent weinerscnitzel and filet mignon.

Restaurant | "Le Pot au Feu"

Small restaurant in downtown Amsterdam. Food was outdone by the service which was fantastic. Our waitress was very helpful and talkative and when she wasn't sure of the directions to the jazz club we wanted to go after dinner, she got the hostess who drew us a map and followed us out the door to make sure we headed in the right direction. Very friendly folks who really seemed to like Americans. The food itself was good as well. Weinerschnitzel was good and the pork fillets my husband chose were outstanding.

Attraction

Located in the Jordaan, almost unnoticeable except for the line forming down the street (that's actually how we found it). Amazing experience, very moving. You are actually allowed to go behind the bookcase, up the stairs and into the rooms where the Frank family hid. It was larger than I had pictured in my memories from Anne's Diary and in spite of some of the hardships they endured (like needing to be quiet during the day when the business below was open) it seemed quite comfortable.

Attraction | "Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum"

Locared on the same campus, the Rijks and Van Gogh Museums were both first class art museums and shouldn't be missed on a trip to the Netherlands. Unfortunately the Rijksmuseum was being rennovated in March, 2004 and only the main gallery was open.
