Williamsburg Vacations

A travel journal to Williamsburg by peaks

We've gone to Williamsburg, Virginia for five straight years. With children, it's easy to plan to go to the amusement parks, the beach, there are many good places to eat and numerous resorts at which to stay.

Four Points by Sheraton Wiliamsburg Historic DistrictBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Four Points By Sheraton Williamsburg"

The four points was the first place we stayed in Williamsburg. We were comped the room for a timeshare presentation for Fairfield. We upgraded the room to a suite and paid the difference. The suites are in a different part of the hotel. The unit was very spacious with a one bedroom, a living room with a pullout sofa bed and a full kitchen. The hotel is one of the closest to Busch Gardens so that is one big selling point. The onsite restaurant, Bones Eatery, is very good for a hotel restaurant. I think breakfast was included and it was very good. It's a sports bar so it's a fun place to sit in the evening and relax, have a drink and chomp on snacks. The indoor pool is a nice size and a favorite of my kids while we were there. For people looking for a hotel and not a condo, I would highly recommend the Four Points.

Fairfield Kingsgate ResortBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Fairfield Kingsgate"

Best Things Nearby:
Fairfield Kingsgate is right near the Route 60 Bypass behind Kmart, so it's convenient to the highway and Busch Gardens. There are many places to eat nearby like Outback and Chili's as well as local favorites like Mama Steve's. It is also near the outlet malls which we visited to pick up things we forgot to pack.

Best Things About the Resort:
The best thing about this resort is the location. It is not a huge resort so it's easy to find your unit and you don't feel lost. They have a swimming pool and fitness center. There is no resaurant but like I said there are many places just nearby. There are activities but nothing you would plan your schedule around like say Smuggler's Notch.

Resort Experience:
We were first introduced to Fairfield Kingsgate during a timeshare presentation. The pool was full of families having fun and I thought this is something I'd like to be a part of so we became members. Fairfield Kingsgate's architecture takes after the surrounding Colonial Williamsburg houses. The unit we stayed in was ample with a full kitchen and eating area, one bedroom with a queen bed and another with two twin beds.

Fairfield Patriots PlaceBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Fairfield Patriot's Place"

Best Things Nearby:
Since it is right near the highway. I-64, you are close to Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, etc.

Best Things About the Resort:
Honestly, of all the places we've stayed in Williamsburg, Patriot's Place is the only place I would not return to. It has a pool and little else in the way of amenities. It is situated behind a Holiday Inn and a Suites motel. You have access to the Holiday Inn's restaurant which was decent and convenient. I can't really think of much to recommend about this resort. There are much nicer ones in Williamsburg.

Resort Experience:
The one bedroom was really small. The kitchen was a kitchenette and I don't think we ate any meals there. The sofa bed on which our children slept was small and uncomfortable. I think we took the matress out and left it on the floor for more stability. The bedroom was okay. Other than the convenience of being right in the middle of Williamsburg, I can't think of anything to recommend this resort. Please read my other reviews for places to stay.

Sunterra Greensprings PlantationBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Sunterra Resorts Greensprings Plantation"

Best Things Nearby:
Ukrop Supermarket and Monticello Marketplace where we did all our shopping.

Best Things About the Resort:
The quality of the units. Nice and spacious. The rooms are nicely sized as are all the rooms. There is a central area with a swimming pool, fitness room and activities center. It is a big resort, but each building only holds four units, so you feel like you have space and are not on top of everyone else.

Resort Experience:
Sunsprings is situated on the grounds of the Williamsburg Golf Course. Therefore, it is very spacious. The units are nicely sized so you can spread out, put your feet up and relax. There are two swimming pools: an indoor, which has the humid, chlorine smell of all indoor pools, and an outdoor pool, which is very pretty and relaxing. It's a nice place to sit and read a book and relax while the kids swim and splash.

They have a shuffleboard court, table tennis, and miniature golf. There is a small fitness room with two treadmills, stationary bike and some weights. The landscaping is well maintained. As a homeowner who has his share of yard work, I appreciate when grounds are well maintained. The unit was such a nice size that we had our relatives over for dinner and there was room to spare. If you go to Sunsprings and you don't relax, it's your own fault!

Pierce’s Pit Bar-B-QBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que"

Please don't ask me where Pierce's is, I wouldn't remember. It took us three tries to find it. I can tell you that when you get there, you'll be glad you did, because the BBQ is the fall of the bone, sweet, juicy kind that you can't beat. We went there twice. Once we had lunch and the second time we had take out when relatives came over. It's fast food but very good food. It's busy, but the staff makes sure the tables are cleaned as soon as people finish. They have a soda station where you can serve yourself soft drinks.

What this place lacks in ambience, it makes up in taste and service. The pulled pork sandwiches were great with a not too sweet, slight vinegar taste. They had ribs, chicken, etc. Although my wife and I are the health conscious types (we exercise and try to eat well), we threw caution to the wind and pigged out (pun intended)! Pierce's reminds of a knock 'em dead comedian: I can't remember anything, but that I really enjoyed myself and would love to do it again. That day when you want to eat in and relax, make sure you get Pierce's on the way home. Enjoy!

Call me crazy but when we go to Williamsburg the first place we go to is Ukrops. It has to be the nicest supermarket we've ever seen. It's got everything we need for our trip but what sets it apart from other supermarkets is the variety. It's got an organic foods section as big as a specialty food store. Their ready made foods are delicious and save us some cooking on the trip. If you go, you have to try their low fat potato salad.

For someone from Pennsylvania, it's great to see wine and beer at a supermarket. (PA supermarkets are alcohol free.) And I don't know if it's a Virginia thing but they actually take the food to your car.

Did I forget the espresso bar? Mmm, having a latte while I shop, now that's class.
