Quick Tips:

Remember Kenya has seasons directly opposite of ours so if you want to visit when it isn't too hot go from May to September. This means however that nights and mornings are cool in the open jeeps so bring those sweaters, gloves if you are like me, and even light jackets. Dress is layers since mid-day will find temperatures in the 80's.

May and June are considered the dry season so there are very few mosquitos, plus the animals migrate at that time so instead of a few animals you might run into gigantic herds. Not only does one see the migrating animals this way but also the hunting animals who follow the herds in the hope of bringing down the weaker animals. As a photographer you won't often get footage such as this elsewhere.

Although some companies cost more I feel the higher level of accomodations are often worth it in countries such as these. Check however whether the higher cost is better accomodations or just the status of the company's name. If you enjoy taking photographs and seeing everything go with a company that provides jeeps where everyone has a window seat, max 7 per tour vehicle.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around is with a safari company. We went with Wilderness Safari Company (800-221-8118). They are much less expensive than say A and K and provide the same level of service and accomodations. Mt Sobek (800-227-2384) is also a good company, as I have travelled with them elsewhere, but I am not familiar in these countries with their accomodations.

One doesn''t go to The Ark for its accomodations or food. One goes to The Ark to see the animals, though this has decreased in recent years I am told. The Ark is built so that the guest can see the animals from viewing areas on each floor, the ground floor being partly open and very up front and personal. Since the property is built by a stream, and lights are on all night viewing of both walking and flying animals occurs. Guests who want to sleep until their favorite animals appear are woken up by bells which sound in their rooms when/if the animals appear. Note the lights attract moths so be prepared, the skys are filled with them around the hotel. Sort of the moth version of the film "The Birds".

The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is on the crest of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is built from millions of river rocks and offers spectacular views of the crater area. Safaris enter the crater below the hotel and than fan out. Since all the vehicles enter the crater at the same time one thinks "oh my god this is going to be like a day at the zoo". However in 10 minutes all the jeeps disappear and at the most one will see one or two of them at any one place during the day.
