South Padre Island - A secret Discovery

A July 2004 trip to South Padre Island by lprstn

A great surprise to get an island feel while still in the States. The beach is beautiful. There's plenty to do that can be bartered for, and lots to do if you are interested. Or you can just hang on the beach. I go to Beef Eaters on Port Isabell--it's next to the more expensive seafood restaurant.

Best Things Nearby:
Beach, beach, beach. You can ride 3 hours to check out Corpis Cristi for more beach and the Aquarium, go 4 hours to Six Flags. Nearby are dolphin tours, parasailing, windsurfing, fishing trips/tours. Tour Mexico and the zoo. Port Isabell for lighthouses. We chose to rest and enjoy the beautiful beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
It's close to the beach.

Resort Experience:
The rooms were all right, a bit outdated and beach worn. From the outside it doesn't look too great, we were apprehensive when we looked at it. It looks like an apartment building. But the pool on the third floor was great and the view from the room was great. The pool stayed crowded. We figured if we go back we will just rent a beach house; that way we will be close to the beach but have our own pool and hot tub which is nice to hang out in the morning after breakfast.

The room we had had a great view of the beach. What a way to wake up. It’s also close by everything. You can pretty much walk to get food and light shopping. It’s a little congested on this part of the Island, but that's ok. We had friends of ours stay at a hotel nearby and they were on a quieter part of the beach. There aren't many resorts on the Island but this one was clean, offered great views and was convenient. Note: A lot of Spring Breakers come here, so if that is your thing the spring is it.

Nowhere to go potty on the beach! So go before you visit. Pack a picnic lunch. We prefered to do the pool in the hot afternoon and save the beach for after 6:30pm because it wasn't as crowded but still nice.
