Wow West Virginia

An August 2004 trip to Davis by detweiler

Canaan, WV, is absolutely wonderful. First-time family vacations are sometimes difficult, especially when the children are 8-years-old and under. The facilities, planned activities, and the friendly staff made vacationing a breeze.

Upon check-in we were wowed by the organization and friendliness of the staff. We were given a packet of information and directed to our condo. Inside our packet was an activity sheet. It listed a tour or excursion to participate in Monday – Thursday. A craft or activity was planned for 6:30pm Monday – Friday. On Friday the staff hosted a farewell covered dish picnic. Land of Canaan supplied all necessities, hot dogs and beverages and those guests who wished to attend brought something.

The condo was clean, spacious and the starter kit was more than enough to get us through the week. I don’t know if this is standard at all RCI resorts (it was our first RCI trade) but it impressed the heck out of my husband and me. All of the beds were comfortable.

The on site activities included a playground, miniature golf, shuffle board, an outdoor pool, indoor activity room (with lots to do), basketball, tennis and, again, probably more I did not notice. These and a little creativity on the part of my husband and I would have been plenty. Yet, the nearby activities were awesome as well. Following is a list of the activities we did:

Blackwater Falls – approx. 20 minutes north
Seneca Rock – approx 40 minutes south, has a 1.5 mile trail to the lookout point
Smoke Hole Caverns – approx 30 minutes south
Canaan Valley State Park – 1 mile south down the road where the deer come so close you can touch them and a hayride and marshmallow roast is offered on Friday evenings

Some of the places we ate were:

Mountaineer Grill – approx 40 minutes south in Petersburg, just past Smoke Hole Caverns and Seneca Rock.
Seriani’s – approx 15 minutes north in Davis, okay pizza not the greatest
The Grill at Canaan Valley Resort – inside the lodge at Canaan Valley State Park, excellent fries and chicken strips

Well, we had a great vacation and did not even get to do everything. That’s the great part about being with RCI--we can go back to do the rest another time if we want to. Just a note to remember: the skiing in the wintertime is supposed to be very good on both Canaan and Timberline trails, both just a mile or two from Land of Canaan.

Quick Tips:

Don't overpack, laundry facilities in condo are great
Don't over schedule your trip, relax and take advantage of on site activities

Best Way To Get Around:

Car
