Braving Belfast

A travel journal to Belfast by Jambo

Is it me, or do you feel somewhat nervous about cities with poor reputations?

Overview

Walk the golden mile, drink and get into the craic. This is an international spelling to avoid misunderstanding. The locals will often refer to craic, good time and drink, as crack, which certainly confused me.

Must see: The Crown (public house), the Waterfront (concert Hall), Botanic gardens (botanic gardens)
Must not see: absolutely anything to do with the troubles. Immediately, tourists who are gullable will receive a tirade of only slightly interesting and completely partisan commentary from BOTH sides.

Quick Tips:

Enjoy the atmosphere. Both communities are great to be with, both are totally partisan, and both are only slightly correct.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking in the city centre. This is a compact city! Buses are good, Citybus (red buses) for local short journeys, Ulsterbuses for the outer suburbs and further. These are limited stops in the city so go faster! Trains, Northern Ireland Railways, good, punctual and reliable, but old! Very good service from City Airport to the city centre (5 minutes). Best station, Great Victoria Street.

High quality. Ignore the reputation of the most bombed hotel in Europe! This is a macabre tourist trap thing. The Hotel library bar is most impressive, rumoured to have the best wine collection in the area.
