Polignano a Mare is a lovely seaside town 3 mi / 5km north of the Calo Corvino resort, our base in Puglia (or Apulia, as it is called in English). The area offers some of the very cleanest beaches and water in the Mediterranean, excellent cuisine and, if you are energetic enough - the castles (including famous Castel del Monte), masserie, trulli, Greek and Roman ruins, and a chain of lively fishing villages. Quick Tips: There are at least three reasons to visit Polignano a Mare: Colorful weekly market on Thursday; amazing Vecchio Polignano (the old Polignano); and the town caves - Palazzese Grotto, Grotta Ardito, Grotta Stalattitica, to name...Read More

After visiting the local market, you have second half of day to explore the Polignano a Mare’s charming old town. On the corner of Via Martiri Dogali and Via Pompeo Samelli you will find excellent Deli which helps you to recharge your batteries. Across the street (Pompeo Samelli) you see the entrance to the Castello (or what has left from it). Turn left and you find Chiesa del Purgatorio, 18th century Baroque Church of Purgatory. Follow the narrow medieval street and turn right at the end of it. Next cobblestone lane brings you to the heart of the old town. Here, at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, you will find the main church in the Vecchio Polignano (the old Polignano) – the ...Read More

Quote:
Polignano a Mare holds market on Thursday when hundreds of trucks from entire province of Bari come here. You can buy almost everything you need here – clothes, footwear, household items, food etc. Everything is new (it is not a flea market), cheap, and of good quality. How to find the market? If you come by train, then from the train station go down by Via Martiri Dogali and turn left at Viale San Francesco d’Assizi. If you rent a car then chances are that you reach the town center via V. San Vito (if you come from Bari), or V. Pompeo Samelli. At Piazza Aldo Moro turn westwards via Martiri Dogali and turn right at Viale San Francesco d’Assizi. Come early because the market ends sharply aro...Read More

How Polignano a Mare got its name? There are several stories about it. As the first story goes, the tiny city was built by the Greeks, and named Polymnianum which means place "constructed on high". Other scholars claim that Pompeo Sarnelli, the Bishop of Bisceglie from 1692 to 1724, built the first permanent village nearby, at Caio Marino. And here he constructed a tower, which he later named "Polimnia" (the name of a muse). Now the main street in Polignano a Mare bears the bishop’s name. Other historians affirm that it was indeed a Greek colony but it was named "Maganza" then "Apenestae". Others say that it was called "Neapolis Peucetorum." What is certain is that coins were found h...Read More

We visited the famous castle during our stay at the Cala Corvino resort. The castle is one of the most unusual places in Southern Italy. You will notice the castle from the distance - Castel del Monte (1.5 hours from Bari, 2 hours from Monopoli or Polignano) dominates the landscape of the Murgia stony plateau raising lonely from a hill. From the lower parking lot at the foot of the hill you take a free shuttle to the upper lot, near the castle (plenty of souvenir stalls here). It takes two hours or so to explore the site. You enter the castle through the portal made up of crushed coral stones (see pictures attached). The portal looks like the Augustan Triumphal Arch. You will also notice...Read More

Having reached the threshold of the upper floor note the vault; its six robust ribs set on shelves have amazing caryatids, sculptured in various positions. The eight rooms on the second floor are also a trapezoidal shape. Every facade, set between two towers, has two remarkable windows (see a picture attached). The windows here are larger than on the ground floor and offer fantastic view of the Andria area. It was convenient to find a stone seat running along the walls. Three rooms have windows that look over the courtyard. If you decide to go up from here onto the terrace, you will notice that a double sloping roof encloses the courtyard area. The inner roof diverted the water to the tank of ...Read More

Magnificent Castel del Monte, which UNESCO named a World Heritage site in 1996, was recently restored. The Castel del Monte (Castle on the Mountain) is unusual blend of elements from the Roman architecture, European Gothic and the Islamic Orient. The whole castle is based on the number 8 – eight towers encircle its courtyard, there are eight rooms on both the lower and upper floors, and its shape is octagonal. It is also an example of symbolic architecture: each building element replay to exact algebraic and astronomical rules. The fact that the number "eight" keeps cropping up in the structure has made some people suppose that such an obsession concealed a magic significance. In th...Read More

The Castle del Monte was a hunting residence of the Emperor Frederick II between 1229 and 1249. Some scholars believe that Federico drawn inspiration from a monument which fascinated him, the Umar mosque of Jerusalem, which was known as the Templum Domini. Whether, on conceiving this structure, Frederick II intended to link the Infinite to the Finite (and symbolically the East to the West) is only one possible interpretation that should be taken with a pinch of salt. From the other hand, the Hoenstaufen - the family from whom his ancestors descended - had used the octagonal structure for several constructions. This fact has caused some researchers to believe that the Egisheim C...Read More

Bari is the main town in Apulia region (Puglia in Italian). Apulia is the pointed heel of Italy’s boot, running down the length of the Adriatic Sea. This is one of the largest Italian provinces, and its architecture and landscape is one of the most diverse. A week in the Cala Corvino resort has offered us a great chance to explore this amazing part of Italy. Old town is ten minutes walk from the train station. At the center of the Cittá Vecchia (old town) is the 12th century cathedral, but more interesting church, Basilica di San Nicola, is just to the north. Castello Svevo, huge Frederick II castle dominates Cittá Vecchia (personally, I like his Castel del Monte more). The castl...Read More

Before our trip to Italy, I knew that St Mark has been stolen by the Venetians and found its final resting place in the San Marco Basilica. In Bari we found that similar story happened to St Nicholas. The remains of St. Nicholas that had been stolen by merchants of Bari in the Middle East. The church’s construction began in 1087 to house the relics. It took awhile, consecration happened only in 1197. One of the most important sanctuaries of Christendom, the Basilica di San Nicola owes its leading role as a spiritual and architectural model to the relics of its saint. Amazingly, it has never been a bishop’s seat – the cathedral is on Piazza Federico II di Svevia. Nevertheless, white and imposing...Read More

The Feast of St. Nicholas of Mira is celebrated in Bari every year on May 6, 7, and 8. If you are happen to be in the area, do not miss the colorful event. St Nicholas originally was the protector of the sailors. But with time, as you probably know, his figure somehow has been transformed into the Giver of Gifts (the familiar name Santa Claus, derives from the Latin Sanctus Nicolaus). The celebrations in the city’s patron saint honor begin on May 7, with a procession in costume that, leaving the port of S. Giorgio, moves slowly through the Cittá Vecchia (Old Town), finally reaching the Basilica di San Nicola. Next morning, the statue of St. Nicholas is carried in procession o...Read More
