Overview

Edmonton

Edmonton is the provincial capital of Alberta, scenic area in some parts. Some of the many things to see depending on your time and interest:

Shopping Malls:

West Edmonton Mall, Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre, Commerce Place, Edmonton City Centre, Kingsway Garden Mall, Londonderry Mall, Manulife Place, Northgate Centre, Southgate Centre, St. Albert Centre, Westmount Centre.

Museums:

Alberta Aviation Museum, Alberta Railway Museum, C & E Railway Museum, Children's Educational Wildlife Museum, Imax Theatre, Muttart Conservatory, Odyssium, Provincial Museum of Alberta, Ukranian Canadian Archives & Museum of Alberta,
Telephone Historical Centre, Zipp's Tattooing & Museum.

Other activities:

Alberta Legislature Building, Rutherford House Friends Society & Arbour Restaurant, Valley Zoo, Edmonton Queen, Whyte Avenue, Jasper Avenue, Chinatown, Devonian Botanic Garden, Citadel Theatre, City Hall, Francis Winspear Centre for Music, High Level Bridge Streetcar, University of Alberta.

Quick Tips:

Resources: Edmonton isn't very known as a tourist destination. Edmonton is the provincial capital, MD Travel Health, Gay Edmonton, Fresh Magazine, Times.10, Pride Centre of Edmonton.

Bring a light jacket as it gets hot with the sun and cool when the sun is covered.

Edmonton isn't good during the winter, as the weather is bitterly cold.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is the preferred mode of getting around, car rental, public transit, bicycling, walking is only once you get to the area of interest. The reason is sprawl, everything developed is too spread out everywhere, which is really bad. The city developers need to control development with a vision.

Highlevel DinerBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Highlevel Diner
High Level Diner serves healthy, hearty food from different parts of the world. I ordered a shrimp special that turned out to be too spicy for my tastes even though our waiter said it wasn't spicy, at least as far as he was concerned. I resolved that by exchanging my dish with another selection with a friend at our table. The large portion of french fries were hot, not greasy.

Restaurant

Tony Roma's
Tony Roma's slogan, "famous for ribs," had to be checked out. On the way in, I noticed on the daily special all-you-can-eat ribs. Our knowledgeable waiter explained what each of the rib selections entailed. I ordered Tony Roma's Riblings Entree of smaller pork spareribs with small bones. The sauce isn't really tangy, strong or overpowering, which is good. Our waiter came by asking if I wanted more ribs, as the kitchen was about to close. The garlic mashed potatoes were a tasty side dish, one of two included with this selection.

Golden Rice BowlBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Golden Rice Bowl
Golden Rice Bowl, serving Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine, is one excellent dim sum house serving some great-tasting food. Our host took us here for dim sum.

Their barbeque baked pork bun is big, fluffy and makes me think of a pillow, it's so fluffy. Their pork spareribs has some added spice, making it a little spicy hot, which I didn't care for. The best were these barbequed pork rolls, three per plate order. Biting into one of these is such a wonderful feeling. The pastry crust is so flaky, light, airy as a crust should be.

Best to be there when they open or before they are packed for dim sum during the early part of their hours. Free delivery for orders over CA$18 within 6km radius. Ten percent discount for pickup orders over CA$18.

Delivery for banquets, parties, business or social gatherings. They have dim sum and regular Chinese food, fully licensed.

Monday-Friday 11am-midnight, Saturday-Sunday-holiday 10am-midnight.

Buddy Wonton Seafood Restaurant
Buddy Wonton Seafood Restaurant was good family-style Chinese cuisine.

First course is a soup, very good and filling. Deep fried tofu with Chinese mushrooms was very good. The skin of the tofu was quite soft, supple, and tender even though deep fried. This was very nice in comparison to what it usually would taste like. The deep-fried fish fillet pieces with corn sauce was very tasty also. A deep fried pork dish was mildly spicy and tasty as well. Then a chicken dish came that I didn't really care for, the chicken was overcooked and dry. A sweet liquid dessert with tapioca was served warm in a rice bowl, a nice touch to finish off the meal.

Smitty's Family Restaurants
Smitty's Family Restaurants is a chain restaurant. This particular location spaces out the clientele for a semi-private feeling. The eggs benedict ordered here was fine, but when asked if I wanted hash browns, seems like frozen tater tots came instead.

Humpty's
Humpty's is a chain restaurant operation. The place was very busy. Eggs Benedict here doesn't have Canadian bacon (back bacon). Instead it offers bacon, ham or shrimp with seafood mix. I tasted my partner's ham and should have ordered the eggs Benedict with ham as it wasn't really salty. The hollandaise sauce was somewhat disappointing in that it was a little spicy. Points off for both. I wouldn't come back nor would recommend it for that reason.

T&T Supermarket is a huge Chinese store that is taking customers away from the older, established stores in Chinatown. It's a very large, bright, clean atmosphere.

Down Under Bath HouseBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Down Under"

Down Under is a gay bathhouse. Choose either a locker or a room, good for twelve hours, except for their lunch specials, which are four hours. Deposit something in their lockbox; you're issued a towel, key(s), lubricant. Extra charge for extra towel or lubricant.

There's one internet station which is constantly in use, TV lounge, steam room, whirlpool, showers, two X-rated TV areas. A motorcycle is parked in the hallway for those into fantasizing that scene.

There were people there, and after walking around several times, I settled in the TV lounge and channel hopped till I found a sci-fi channel playing "Andromeda Strain" but constantly full of commercials.

They have a complimentary white courtesy phone, which we used to call our friend/host to pick us up afterwards. A courtesy taxi phone line also available.

Boots n' SaddleBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Boots n' Saddle Assn"

Boots n' Saddle Assn is how it's listed, the oldest gay bar in Edmonton. It wasn't busy the night we went and the clientele there weren't friendly to strangers. There were two television sets, one at the bar, the other showing the same program in the background of a pool table.

A friendly, but cautious black cat appeared looking for affection. The bartender said it was one of three, the two others are more wild. Found them on the rooftop and feeding them.

Provincial Museum of Alberta has exhibits for water, mountain, parkland, biological, insect, plant, fish, animal life forms, Aboriginal peoples, minerals, dinosaurs displays.

There's a thought-provoking display about ethical issues on DNA research and privacy.

Gift shop and cafe available. We had lunch at their cafe which very extremely inefficient taking our orders even though the person is very nice. The chicken wrap is recommended, cream of leek soup on the watery side but good, mixed greens with raspberry sauce is a must try.

IMAX TheatreBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Odyssium/IMAX"

Odyssium
Odyssium is a science museum mainly for children. There's a unique mechanical work that's interesting to watch as it does its thing. Admission to either the museum only, IMAX only, or combo for both.

The Body Fantastic in the Allard Family Gallery appealed to me. We watched the IMAX presentation of "Forces of Nature," while informative was alright but I wouldn't want to do it again. I much enjoyed the Climate Change Show with an animated talking sheep multi-media presentation better than the IMAX. There's a cafe and gift shop on site.

Exhibit 10am-9pm, try to go when they first open as it becomes more crowded with lots of children and increasingly so when we left after 1pm.

Garneau TheatreBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Garneau Theatre played "The Manchurian Candidate" so we watched it at this theatre. It's an older theatre and on Mondays all seats $5 which puts a smile on my face, save money. Concession stand prices are better than the more expansive chain cinemas. Floors were sticky and I noticed a few marks on the large screen. The sound is decent.

They actually have someone at the projection booth to correct focus, which isn't done hardly at the chain cinemas. This is great as most of the chain movie houses are just slightly out of focus and apparently no one complains to correct the focus. A big plus for this place for that.

Second CupBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Second Cup
Second Cup is like Canada's version of Starbucks Coffee. This particular location has an older clientele from the residents coming in around the neighborhood. It has indoor seating only, and the pastry selection is better than the one we went in earlier but left when the pastry selection wasn't to our liking. I selected the old reliable apple pie, which was fine and not too sweet. There was a napoleon; the pastry was too hard, not flaky. The double chocolate ball covered in nuts was way too sweet. The French roast coffee was very good, the milk wasn't ice cold and served in a heated cup bringing up the temperature.

YEG - Edmonton International Airport is the second largest (7000 acres) and the fifth busiest airport in Canada.

It was interesting going through immigration, being asked "why are you here, and what's the purpose of your visit?". I asked myself that, as well as my partner, prior to coming here. What is there to see and do here? Things tourists do: sightsee, take photos, spend money, explore, experience, enjoy.

Ground transportation includes taxis, limousines, sky shuttles, hotel shuttles and car rentals.

While I was waiting for my partner to get through customs, I observed a reunion of another family. The little girl was so cute and didn't remember one of the family members when asked if she remembered her.
