Shakespear In Love-Life In Ashland, Oregon

A travel journal to Ashland by smileykylie

If you don't allow yourself to get scared off by the sometimes eccentric, tree-hugging locals, Ashland is a town full to the brim with unique things worth exploring.

Of course, Ashland is best known for its Shakespearean Theatre; folks travel from all around the world for a performance. If you go during the summer months, be sure to check out the green show, outside the Criterian Theatre at seven. But there is more to Ashland than Shakespeare. The downtown is filled with unusual shops, and Lithia Park always presents a great time. Come July 4th, a spectacular fireworks show you'll not soon forget follows a quirky and fun parade filled with food and fun for everyone. The Saturday Market by the creek, where locals sell pretty much whatever you can think of, is always worth a glance as well.

Quick Tips:

Don't miss Rare Earth, and if you're in the mood for a decadent dessert, Munchies is the place for you. For winter travelers, be sure to check out the Mt. Ashland ski resort and the small-but-romantic ice skating rink across from the park.

Best Way To Get Around:

Pretty much everywhere in the city is within walking distance, so leave those stilettos at home! For the less walking-oriented, the bus does a loop around Ashland for free.
