Much to my surprise and delight, I found Fairfield Glade to have some wonderful craft and art classes for guests. I spent one afternoon making a stained glass suncatcher - real stained glass, not the painted cheap stuff. I was so excited as I had been planning, and still intend to go to the Toledo, Ohio Museum of Art to take a class in stained glass work. I never expected to be able to find a class while on vacation at this resort. In addition to my tulip suncatcher, I painted a tile for my kitchen and painted a plaster of paris wall hanging for my granddaughter's birthday - all in colors to match her room. There was also a card-making class at the marina one day. These were highlights for me. In addition we had great fun at the marina picnic where we had dinner for that included a pontoon tour of the lake. We rented a pontoon for 2 hours to tour on our own another day and saw a small sailboat regatta -- all driven by remote controls - big toys for big boys. Everyone was waving and having a great time. In fact, someone heading for the "regatta" alerted us to the fact that the "regatta" was about to begin and we followed him down.
While there we went to two plays at the Cumberland County Playhouse. One was Beauty and the Beast and it was wonderful for adults and children. The music was wonderful as was the acting. The other was Smoke on the Mountain, and it was very funny. It left one in a wonderful, happy, upbeat, spiritual mood while not being stuffy at all. Since it centered on a church and special singing night, I was afraid it would be stuffy and self-righteous. It was nothing of the sort! It poked a bit of fun at self-righteousness, promoted tolerance and a good feeling. All that and music that was some of that old fashioned gospel and was great! I would recommend both the plays to anyone.
Quick Tips:
Don't follow MapQuest directions but get the directions from the Fairfield Glade website. The office is open 24 hours a day so you can check in any time. We got there about 1 a.m. and were quickly checked in and given directions to our condo. There is a computer in the lobby available 24 hours on a first come, first serve, sign up basis. That was great to be able to check email. There is a therapy pool at the Wellness Center, but I never had time to go there. There is an all adult pool which I wish I had visited, but didn't. Check out the plays at the Cumberland County Playhouse and make your reservations. There were 3 plays going on when we were there and we made it to only 2 of the 3 and if the other was similar, we missed out!
Best Way To Get Around:
A car, or at least bicycles, are a must. I saw no public transportation. The marinas are a distance off. Restaurants are good and are fairly close, but I don't walk 5 minutes anywhere so I'd want a car. The scenery is great. Little shops have gifts, fudge, art, etc. I came back with a number of inexpensive but nice items like placemats and napkins, an artful egg separator that looked like an owl and the mouth is where the white comes out while the yellow stays inside. And I had the things I made myself at the Arts and Crafts Center as part of the recreation. I didn't even get to the pools on the property because of all the other things to do. From our condo, it would be a bike ride or a drive to any pool so transportation is necessary. Read Less
