Return Trip After 20 Years

A May 2004 trip to Malindi by andrea carbutt

A return visit to Kenya for my husband, who had served there with the British army. Two weeks holiday with a three-day safari.

The safari was excellent and worth the money. We saw everything we had hoped to see and more. Visit the woodcarving cooperatives - priced items and no bartering required. Seafood is a must.

Quick Tips:

Make sure that you collect your luggage at Nairobi Airport before joining your connecting flight - even if you are told at the UK airport that it will be transferred. Book pickup from Mombasa Airport with the resort prior to leaving the UK. Make sure you keep ahold of your luggage to avoid paying tips.

Best Way To Get Around:

Arrange with the hotel animateur for a taxi - we had a taxi for 2 1/2 hours whilst we visited sites of interest for a cost of £7.50. Beware of public transport and especially the trains.

Best Things About the Resort:
The staff were excellent and very friendly - nothing was too much for them. Very clean and of a very high standard.

Resort Experience:
The one-bedroom, single-storey apartment was of a reasonable size - with two large sofa beds in the front room. Even though there were large windows, you needed the light on in the daytime - partially due to the mango trees outside. Daily maid service where everything was cleaned. Flowers and tropical fruit bowl on arrival. Flowers and messages placed on the beds most evening. Very popular with an Italian clientele that returned every year. Animateurs were very friendly and a bus every hour was laid on to go downtown. A bus at 10am took you to a private beach that was affiliated with the restaurant at the resort.

Although it was excellent, it was very false, as outside the walls there were people with no water and living in mud huts or plastic sheeting. Any visitors must go with an open mind. The two-day safari to Tsavo National Park arranged by the resort was excellent.

Restaurant

We took the half-board option at the resort and were lucky enough to have Lorenzo's Restaurant to hand. Seafood and Italian speciality. There was silver service by the very friendly and efficient waitering staff - who insisted on pouring all drinks and were put out if you did it yourself. The food was of an exceptional standard and the Mwembe Seafood Platter was a sight for sore eyes. Well worth a visit.
