Marburg, Germany

A travel journal to Marburg by Judy

Quote: Home of the world-famous Philipps Universität, Marburg is a lovely old city on the Lahn River with a towering 12th century castle, the church of St. Elizabeth and a beautiful old Rathaus (1524). Many half-timbered houses are located throughout the older part of the city.

Overview

Quote:
Marburg has several traditional folk and religious festivals each year. My most memorable moment in Marburg was the 'DeutschesTrachtenfest' held in September 1996. This folk festival consisted of a wonderful parade featuring 276 native-dressed groups from all over Germany, each in their own regional costumes. The music was wonderful as was the authenticity of the colorful costumes. I will never forget this occasion. I purchased a video cassette of the parade and watch it once in a while to bring back many good memories. A smaller hotel (only 42 rooms) near the main railway station. Each room had a TV, data port connections, and mini bar. We found it clean and comfortable.

Founded in 1527 by Philipp the Magnanimous (shortly after the Reformation) this is the first Protestant university in Germany. You'll find wonderful mural paintings here which depict 800 years of the city's history. 15,000 students attend classes here. Among the famous students from the past are the Grimm Brothers and 9 Nobel Prize winners. Penn State University has a successful exchange program with Philipps.

Marburg Castle Best of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Quote:
This 12th century castle overlooks the city and is part of the university. The Knight's Hall has an impressive collection of medieval artifacts. Each year the traditional May festival is held here and there are Sunday concerts on the castle grounds in July and August. The view of the city from the castle is spectacular.

Elizabethkirche Best of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Quote:
This Early Gothic church was one of the first to be built on German soil. Named in honor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, who was a young woman devoted to serving the poor. She worked in a hospice for children during her short life. She died before her 24th birthday. The church itself is an architectural masterpiece and a peaceful place for prayer and reflection.
