It wasn't a bad stop, but our room was on the first floor - Room 111 - and the room smelled of smoke (cigarette), the sink didn't work, and it was really noisy throughout the night. But after all, it was only a place to sleep for the night, I guess.

Following our departure from King's Dominion, we landed in Williamsburg, VA, and the accommodations at Sleep Inn were just wonderful. We were up on the second floor, and our room, with double beds was very fine. There was an inside pool, and a very nice dining room, and the hallways were nicely cleaned. There was even a DVD player in the room if you wanted to rent them downstairs for $9.95. There was no VCR player, and we had hoped for one, as our girls would've liked to have had one of their Barney videos we brought along for the trip. All in all, though, a very nice stay, and in addition, there were four-wheelers to wheel your luggage back and forth from the parking lot, and there were also nicely lit areas where you could read outside your room or even go down to the lobby and read a newspaper which was provided. Very nice indeed!

This was essentially a one-night stay over while we visited some family members in Virginia Beach, so we didn't get to use many of the amenities it offered. But it was a very nice hotel room, and it was air-conditioned, and provided us with the solace we needed after our long trip.

The hotel was surrounded by many eating establishments and the attractions of the city, and later in the evening, I took a walk down one of the main thoroughfares and enjoyed the nightlife which it offered.

I can't we were too impressed with this stop. It was another one-night sleep over before we made the trip home to Winchendon, Mass.

The outside grounds were dirty and unkempt, and that was my first impression. My second impression was given to me by my wife, and it was concerning her check in. She essentially had to wait for someone in the lobby to help her, and when the person saw her waiting, she casually asked my wife what she wanted and what her business was. When my wife said we wanted to check in, then the young lady had to get some help from the bartender on how to check somebody in.

Then there was the issue of asking about discounts for Six Flags, because we were just about ready to travel there. The sign on the desk said they had discount tickets, and when my wife asked the receptionist and the desk about it, she stated she didn't know anything about it, and she couldn't do anything to help us out.

The following morning, just as we checked out, we asked where the breakfast buffet was, and another young lady waited on my wife, and she was so distracted that she couldn't focus on the task at hand, and instead of paying attention to my wife's checkout, she asked the guy behind him if she could help him. Then my wife had to ask her for the paperwork back, which she apparently didn't have any knowledge about.

When we went into the buffet, and this was just before 10:00 AM, we were told it was over, and then I asked my wife if she was told about that when she checked us in. She said she was never told when the breakfast buffet was, or was she told when we had to check out in the morning.

By in large, this had to be the worst stop, and maybe they had "extra help" on this July 3rd morning or previous evening, but it didn't sit well with us at all. I don't think I'll ever go back!!

The hotel room seemed okay, and the accommodations were acceptable, but there was just too much about this particular Best Western that didn't add up.

Best Things Nearby:
Disney World is obviously one of the best things nearby, as is Sea World, dinner theatres, and all the rest of the theme parks.

Best Things About the Resort:
Its convenience, amenities, and its geography to most of Central Florida. Then there are the people, service, and air conditioned units to keep one from the intense heat.

Resort Experience:
Sheraton's VISTANA is a dream come true for those of us who like to be near all the major attractions in Central Florida. You're only a few miles away from Disney World and some of the other theme parks, and probably about 15-20 minutes from Kissimmee, as well as the other wonderful sights that you read about in the travel brochures. The unit is wonderful, and well kept, and our resort unit was next to one of the many ponds which dot the VISTANA resort. You can feed the ducks, turtles, and fish, if you want, or you can sit on the deck and watch the periodic thunderstorms and even read and relax at the many pools. The units are air conditioned, and it provides a great respite from the 94-96 degree heat and humidity. A cool place!!!

Best Things Nearby:
The pool, the recreation area, outside activity area, and the boat wharf.

Best Things About the Resort:
It was quiet and serene, and it gave us the first chance to actually "unwind" from our 12-hour journey from Orlando, Florida

Resort Experience:
This was a nice stop. We arrived at 11PM and 20 minutes later we were unloading our luggage, or should I say, I was unloading our luggage. The unit was four (4) flights of stairs from the van, and I guess I expected there'd be more of a "family friendly" unit closer to the ground level, especially with toddler twin girls.

The unit wasn't bad. There were some areas which were dirty, such as some of the dishes, and the area where the sink was, and in particular the sink disposal, really had a stench to it. Then we had to watch out for sugar ants, because if you made the mistake of leaving "anything" on the counters, you woke up in the morning with these little ants everywhere on the counter.

It was a nice place, regardless of some of these other things, and as we looked out of our unit, we had the sight of the boat wharf, and the deck faced it squarely. We had the opportunity to sit on the deck and enjoy the less humid weather, probably around 84 degrees now, and the beautiful sunsets and serene settings. I only found one mosquito as well.

The pool was nice, and we spent a couple of times in it. However, the vending machines which allegedly had soda were usually sold out and the arcade games in the Recreation Building weren't working after the second day we arrived.

This place seemed to be "way out there," but about 20 minutes away, you encountered the Interstate highway and the local traffic. The place is growing as well, and there's wildlife all around.

There was one important moment, when one of our girls locked herself in the bedroom, and there wasn't any way to get her out, other than my getting a knife and turning the lock from the outside of the door. We recommended they get some sort of easier access to the rooms, especially with families who have children. And I'll admit that the service arrived at our door in a few minutes to help us out, which we appreciated.

Following our first night of rest at the Days Inn in Fredericksburg, we had breakfast the following morning right across the street at this wonderful little Denny's restaurant. It was a really good breakfast. There was good service, and our family ate really well, at bargain prices for a quality meal. The coffee was good, too.

Country BuffetBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

As a buffet-style restaurant, this one was right up there with the best of them, and we had breakfast at this restaurant during one of our days in Williamsburg. The buffet had all the breakfast trimmings, from juice, eggs, toast, pancakes, coffee, and the rest, and you could eat as much as you liked for a reasonable cost. Again, the coffee was fine.

At a later time during the day, the buffet turns into a lunchtime buffet, and what was interesting about this restaurant was that it was all home cooking, and the service was fine, as were the owners who greeted us.

This was one of the nicest eating spots on our East Coast adventure, although we used it for our "Take Out" order. The service was exceptional, and given my tiredness, the young lady who took my order was professional, courteous, and had a fine sense of humor. And to top it off, the order was ready within 20 minutes and all of our meals were hot, packaged, with all the added extras given as a convenience (i.e., salt, pepper, forks, knives, spoons, etc.). I'd go back there in a heartbeat. A wonderful stop, and the food was delicious!

Restaurant

The last Dunkin' Donuts we were to see before we arrived in Orlando was right there in Williamsburg, and both times I patronized the place, there was only one person waiting on everyone who was in line. He was a brave soul, and when I later went through the "Drive Thru," I commended him on his hard work (and probably no thanks), and he smiled and continued to provide fine service. I appreciated it. And the coffee was as good as ever!

Unlike an earlier experience in Fredericksburg, Virginia, I found the service at this place to be very rude. Our waitress, Lisa, seemed okay at first. Of course our girls and our family just had spent about an hour on Interstate 95 in a traffic jam, so they weren't in the best of moods.

Lisa seemed okay, like I said, and she was friendly towards the girls, until she had to wait for our order and the girls didn't respond to her in a friendly way. Then she became gruff and at the end of the meal, she literally threw our bill on the table and walked away without a word. I don't think I'll ever eat there again, but maybe it was the time of day, or maybe...Lisa actually didn't like kids.

Mimi's Dessert Shoppe & MoreBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Mimi's Dessert Shoppe & More"

This was a superb place, and it was located in the Food Lion Shopping Center (in the back by the turtle pond) at Emerald Plantation.

They specialize in the finest cheesecakes and pies; ice cream; soups and sandwiches; baked bread; pastries; and flavored coffee and tea. And it was a very nice relaxing stop. Following our order, we relaxed on the outside deck and watched the turtles in the pond below, and when our food was ready, they delivered to us on the deck.

A fine dining experience, and it was right for the price, as well as being delicious. We all ordered sandwiches and drinks, and our twin girls had some of the Hebrew National franks which I ordered, and all, in all (including the great pastry), this was a place I'd come back to again if I was in the area.

Emerald Plantation Winchendon, Massachusetts

This was the first time for us all to be here, and my wife was really excited, because we'd passed this place many times in the past. The day was hot and ripe for fun, and following an ordeal at the box office, where we finally got our tickets, we made it through the security screens and FINALLY got to get to have some fun at the park. There were lots of people and our twin girls had a ball on the rides. They especially liked the calliope, which was surrounded by the sights and sounds of the many thrill rides, and they enjoyed watching those, too. Of course there was the threat of a thunderstorm, and my wife and friend were disappointed to have "The Volcano" shut down because of the storm which ended up soaking us all to the bone. But we made the best of it and ended up in some of the stores to shop.

What was interesting at the park was the fact that you were given a little card entitled "How was your day?" in which you could register your feedback about your experience, and possibly win prizes. My prize, unfortunately, as I later learned, was that the box office never returned my credit card to me, and I didn't learn of this for a couple of days while we were in Williamsburg. That was the most disappointing part of the entire park experience, and I got to share it in my feedback. But we'd go again in the future.

This is not a shop for the little ones, nor was it "toddler-friendly," as we were watched very closely while we held our twin girls by the hand. It was a nice store, though, and there were hundreds of dolls, many of them handmade, and many of them very pricey, with some price tags up to a thousand dollars. If you've got the time, patience, and the budget, this is a nice stop. Just don't bring the kids. The staff appreciate it, even if they smile when you walk in with them.

This was an interesting diversion for us, following our trip to the Doll Factory. This site provided our family with some rest and recreation; however, we had more hopes in "Kiddieland" than what was provided. Only one of our twin girls was allowed on most of the rides - four total - because she was a little shorter than her younger sister, and there wasn't really anything more for the little tykes than that. The height requirements need to be revamped, as well as the area expanded if it's going to accommodate more families on vacation.

There was also an arcade for those who were like minded in that area, as well as a circular figure eight track, which provided a real good ride for Go-Karts. It didn't end after a couple of laps, but it was a good 10 minute ride. A nice change from some other areas. We stayed for a couple of hours, and thought that if we were in the area again, we might return.

Walt Disney World's Magic KingdomBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Disney World's Magic Kingdom"

We got into Magic Kingdom on 6-21-04, and we arrived around noontime. It was a hot day, made even hotter in the noonday sun, but it was well worth it. It was a great time, and my wife didn't get too emotional as we wheeled our little girls up Main Street to see Cinderella's Castle. We took them on "Snow White's Scary Ride," which tended to be a little scary for them both, and then we went on "Winnie the Pooh," which again was a little more than we anticipated for the girls. Of course having the "Fast Pass" was a good thing, because we toured the grounds and got back in time for the "Pooh" ride, which was incredibly colorful, and even as our girls love the characters, some of the ride was a bit over the top. We stayed to watch the Parade of Characters, and that was really special to see our girls recognize Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and many of the characters from such films as Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid, among others. The music was special, as was the entire environment, specially formulated for the little ones.

Our last ride before we left at 4PM was the Carousel, and it was a fair estimation that a few hours at the park for our toddler twins was just right, and not too overstimulating for them. A great time!!!

Attraction

On 6-22-04, we went to the shops at Downtown Disney, and we weren't disappointed. Our girls just love the characters in the windows of the shops, and we focused our attention on "The Disney Store," naturally. A marvelous time to see so many pictures, videos, plush toys, and new additions to the store, and we spent a little more than an hour, especially as it was air conditioned, and we walked away with some nice mementos.

Then we walked over to the "Lego Land" and saw all the projects which were made from legos. Our girls are a little too young for that right now, but it was interesting. The Lego Land Sea Serpent is quite the sight to see. Following this, we strolled around the marketplace and the girls tasted their first "Italian Ice," a cherry flavor, and it hit the spot and refreshed us all.

B.J.'s WholesaleBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

A few days after our arrival in Orlando, we headed to B.J.'s because of our need for some groceries, as we had another couple of weeks on the road. Plus we wanted to find out if the gas prices were lower, as indeed they were.

It's interesting that in the small area where the resorts are located, the average price for a gallon of gasoline on 6-22-04 was $2.19 a gallon for regular, but when you went up the road to B.J.'s about 5 miles, the price was down to about $1.83 a gallon, so we tanked up there, due to the fact that we have a membership, and this time it paid off. We didn't have to get gas again until we left the Orlando area. And the prices of groceries were far more reasonable than the stores which surrounded the resorts.

B.J.'s Wholesale
4697 Millenia Plaza Way Orlando, Florida

This was basically an "Off-Broadway" production, complete with a short story and elaborate set. The cost is usually $44.95, but we had discount tickets for $37. This included complimentary appetizers, followed by the "Pirate's Feast," and included tossed salad, chicken, beef or shrimp, red potatoes or rice with mixed vegetables, followed by apple cobbler ala mode. Then there was complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks, or coffee.

The programs before the show were sold for $5, and when you got inside, you were hustled over to have a picture taken with your group, which ultimately came to $20 for the first picture and $10 for any subsequent picture. The suggested adult tip after the meal was $15/children-$10. Then there was the cash bar. The most interesting part of this whole program was the Maritime Museum, which gave a history of pirates. Unfortunately, they didn't sell any books at the gift shop.

The show was top-notch, though. Good performances, to include acrobatics, singing, dancing, and special effects. It was a little violent, though, with many scenes of pirate fights, brutality, and gratuitous violence and violence towards women. One scene had "Captain Black" strike the princess in the mouth and knock her to the floor, and then he spat upon her. It begged the question whether the children should've been allowed in, but this is mass market produced tourism business. And in any event, I believe the images in the show were a little too violent for the money.

Following the show, there was a "Disco Party" with 60's and 70's music played by a DJ.

It was a pleasant experience overall, and I was impressed that there was no smoking in this production or even on the premises. Apparently, the state of Florida passed an ordinance back in 7-1-2003, which doesn't allow for smoking in this kind of venue.

Attraction | "Disney's Animal Kingdom"

As the girls seemed to be feeling better, we entered Animal Kingdom on 6-25-04 at around noontime again, and it was another hot day. We took the girls to "The Festival of the Lion King," which was a brightly colorful and costumed tribute to the Lion King. The performances were terrific, and above all, it was a break from the humidity, as it was air conditioned. Following the program, we had something to eat at the "Restuarantosauras," which featured McDonald's food, and it was a nice stop, but our girls were getting to the point where they needed to nap.

After lunch, we went to the Character Landing, where our girls saw Pooh, Eeyore, and Tigger, and this had to be the highlight of their day. And it wasn't a crowded situation, either. We had the characters mostly to ourselves at this time.

Just before we left, we saw the "Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade," and this was a rollicking, fun, musical-drumbeat festival. The parade lasted about 30 minutes, and again, we saw all the Disney characters, from Goofy to Pluto to Mickey to the others from the Lion King and other films. A really nice time.

Osceola Flea MarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

We love flea markets, and on this Saturday, the 26th of June, we headed down the highway to what has been billed "the largest flea market in the area," and it was. We spent quite some time looking at all the dealers, and we purchased a few things which were bargain basement prices. Then we sent to the snack area where they served food, and opposite the dining area, there was a Karaoke Sing, free to anyone who wanted to sing to the customers, and again, this was in an air conditioned area.

I took the liberty of singing "You are my Sunshine," and it was a lot of fun, and my first time doing it.

Following our trip to Kissimmee, this last Saturday in June had us going to Long's Christian Outlet, which was more of a wholesale, discount place where there were many discontinued items for sale, many products up to 80% off the retail price. We love to shop at these kinds of places, and we picked up some gifts and books.

Right next door to the Outlet is the Long's Christian Book and Music store, which is more of a contemporary, up to speed products which are current, and the prices are a little different. They're more in line with the average retail price, and I had the opportunity to buy a book I'd been waiting to purchase since we left Williamsburg, VA, and where I discovered that I'd lost my credit card earlier.

What was really interesting about this Long's Christian Book and Music was the fact that it had a reading area, a coffee shop, and vending machines for soda inside, however, the vending machines weren't working the day we visited.

All in all, this was a nice venture, and we'd go back if we had a chance. Nice family friendly atmosphere.

This was one of those little "out of the way spots" my wife wanted to visit while we were in North Carolina, due, in part, to the fact that she's an avid Noah's Ark collector.

The store is run very well, and it is very attractive. The proprietress, Susan Gore, was very personable and helpful, and the patrons were also very nice. If you're looking for a little spot off the beaten path, I'd recommend this little place. And not only that - Front Street is home to quite a few other little shops, including one right across the street, which is both something of a malt shop and a small store specializing in Elvis and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia.

There are guided tours at the Beaufort Historic Site, with docents in period dress who guide you through the restored dwellings, and the cost is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children.

Then there's the Old Burying Ground Tour, the Vintage English Double-Decker Bus Tour and the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, with all of these activities designed to give you a "flavor" of life previous to the era we currently live in. This is specifically the depiction of the 18th and 19th century coastal Carolina.

There are BHA Annual Events as well, such as Publick Day, Beaufort Old Homes and Gardens Tour, the Antiques Show & Sale, the Community Thanksgiving Feast, and the Coastal Carolina Christmas Walk.

It probably wouldn't hurt to put their e-mail for those who want more specifics - www.historicbeaufort.com

We were hoping to see the wild ponies of Carrot Island while we were there, and we walked the dock hoping to catch a glimpse, and among other things, you can actually get a tour of Carrot Island and get even closer than just looking from the dock. My wife, who is an avid lover of horses, would've been greatly thrilled just to see one.

This happened to be one of those "out of the way stops" we made on the 1st of July, due to the fact that the storms of the previous day were over. You're so close to the ocean at this location, that the previous day they issued flash flood warnings for a couple of hours during some intensive thunderstorm and torrential rain activity.

I've already made mention of the great bookstore we saw there. And in addition, there are chocolate shops, Michelangelo’s Pizza shop, clothing, arts and crafts, and all the special places you're apt to look for on vacation.

In a little out-of-the-way spot not too far from our resort, we came upon this nice little shop in Bayboro, and met one of the owners - Gladys Wright, who also happens to pastor together with her husband at this combination Christian bookstore and church. They have regular services and healing services, as well as Bible studies and other activities, and their motto for service is this - "Equipping and Perfecting ALL with the FULL Knowledge of the Word of God." It was my guess that it was a Charismatic denomination, or even Pentecostal in flavor.

The service was wonderful, though, and Gladys spent some time getting to know our family when we first stepped in, and we took advantage of some sales while we were there.

As you can probably tell, our family enjoys finding these spots along with our vacation. This particular store was a relaxing place, and it had two floors filled with the nicest merchandise, and the latest releases in books, both fiction and non-fiction.

On the second floor, there were the plaques and other types of collectibles (the breakable kind), and in a small little room on the second floor was a treasure trove of discounted items, including books and videos and rock bottom prices. I just wish we could have stayed a little while longer, but we happened to be on our way to visit my son in Swansboro, NC, and we didn't want to be late. But for the 30 minutes or so we were there, I walked out with a few items, and made a mental note to visit again if we were ever in the area.

Great service and pleasant demeanor from Doris Hollowell, who owned the store, along with her husband, Gene.

On July 2nd, following our departure from North Carolina, we arrived in the busy city of Newport News, VA and spent a couple of hours touring the "Virginia Living Museum." We used our AAA card to get a discount, and essentially what this museum focused on was wildlife and environmental concerns.

There were reproductions of wild habitats for animals, as well as terrariums, aquariums, underground caves and its terrain, not to mention reproductions of the Virginia landscape. Plus, there was a really nice walk along a wooden path which stretched around the facility, and we had the opportunity to see many animals, including wolves, coyotes, possums, deer, turkey, geese, beaver, among others. There were also bobcat and alligator, and at each station, there were facts about the animals posted, as well as other knowledge to keep the visitors aware of the kinds of creatures they were observing in their reproduced environs.

There were outdoor exhibits, naturally, and indoor exhibits, and following our two hour stay, we stopped into the "Wild Things Museum Store" for a couple of mementos.

We didn't get to experience some of the other features, but then, if you lived nearby, you might want to return and visit the Planetarium Theater of some of the other summer exhibits which are feature for a couple of months and then change. This was a very educational experience for our whole family.

This was the third amusement park we attended, and it came at the end of our vacation, and on the night of July 3rd. At this juncture, we were all very tired, but our twin toddler girls had a "blast" at the kiddieland, and for the first time, we watched them really enjoy their rides. There were the swings, and a mini roller coaster, and a boat ride, and an airplane ride, and lots more. Really special to all of us was the Six Flags policy that there was to be "No Smoking" in the area for kids, and this was a marvelous policy, and one which I hope is incorporated nationwide in other theme parks.

The evening brought even more excitement, as just before the park closed at 10:00 PM, they issued their fireworks display, and our girls saw their first fireworks display of their life, and they really did well with it, if only for about 10 minutes. As we were walking back to the parking lot, the fireworks continued, and I have to figure that from start to finish, it was close to 20-25 minutes of the spectacle.

A nice end to a good vacation!!!

Resort TourBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Part of our package deal at Sleep Inn required that we attend a resort tour of the "Fairfield Inn" in Williamsburg, and around 2:30 PM on 6-19-04, all five of us - my wife and I, our twin toddlers, and a 13 year old female friend of ours attended this tour. A nice man named Zachary tried to sell us on the newest thing - "points" - but it really wasn't the right time for us. Of course at this time of the day, our girls were really tired, hungry, and somewhat grumpy because of the hot weather, and Zachary first tried to sell my wife on the idea, and then he tried to sell me on the idea.

There wasn't any real "tour" to speak of, because at the end of the 90 minute presentation, we were shown a short film of some "testimonies" of owners who spoke highly of Fairfield properties, and then we were subjected to a video presentation of areas in the world where Fairfield had their resorts. Again, it was bad timing, even 90 minutes later, because our girls had short attention spans and were really getting cranky. Given this fact, Zachary still pushed forward, and I had to remind him that if he had twin girl toddlers at age 2 years old, he might understand our position.

All in all, it was a fair presentation, but I would have preferred going outside and actually seeing a physical presentation of the Fairfield resort. Then when we had to be "closed out" by another representative before we were given the "free gifts" and we were asked if Zachary had spoken about the money aspect, and we said no, and he seemed to be a little miffed about it, and then tried to sell us some property. That wasn't our intent, we told him, and we left shortly afterwards.

This was not something I'd want to repeat, given the circumstances, and the push to get us to translate our own timeshares into "points" was a bit over the edge. We were happy with our own timeshare weeks, and we were already booked into a Fairfield resort in North Carolina later during our East Coast adventure.

There was a downside to our vacation, in that our little girl, Johanna, had gotten ill on the night of 6-22-04, so we called the Florida Hospital Centra Care, which is a walk-in urgent care unit at 12500 South Apopka-Vineland Road in Orlando (Tel: 407-934-2273), and we received some great care. Of course there were the obvious forms which needed to be filled out, and after an hour of waiting, we were escorted into the doctor's office and our little girl's vitals were taken, and we discovered she had a sore throat. The Doctor cautioned us that "strep throat" is very common in Orlando, and he wanted to be sure she didn't have that, so we got a 5-day prescription (antibiotic) and then went to the hospital pharmacy to have it filled.

This was a nice touch in Orlando, in that many of the patients are on vacation, and the Centra Care is actually operated by the Seventh Day Adventists, and it is a highly acclaimed unit recognized nationwide. We were very happy with the service, as was our Johanna, who started to get better a few days later.

When you have twins, it is inevitable that if one gets sick, the other follows suit, and our other daughter, Samala, got sick the following night that Johanna got sick. So...we ended calling the Florida Centra Care again, only this time we were recommended to go to Kissimmee and visit the Oakdale Pediatrics Unit. We were told that they were a little less expensive than the Centra Care, and we appreciated that.

As it turned out, we were told that Samala had a "viral infection," and that other than that, she was really a very healthy girl. They treated us really good, and I was impressed at these two instances of instant care for our girls while we were so many hundreds of miles away. And we kept our Samala on Tylenol and she eventually got better.

Following our departure from the state of Florida, we took the first exit in Georgia, on 491 St. Mary's Road in Kingsland, Georgia, and joined the myriad other travellers who noticed that the price of gas at this travel plaza was $1.69 a gallon.

It had everything for the traveller, including a traffic tie-up, as many travellers found the inexpensive gas for their long journeys very appealing. The inside of the travel plaza had slot machines for gamblers, video games, restrooms, a restaurant, and harried service people who were tallying up the orders of the travellers.

After I picked up some iced tea, Mountain Dew, and some snacks, we were headed up the road on Interstate 95 to North Carolina.

Story/Tip

This was the second trip which my family made down the East Coast, and it was far more interesting one than the previous one. Of course that was 5 years ago, when we didn't have our toddler twin girls with us, and when our friend, Brittany was five years younger. When she first took the trip with us, she was about 8 years old, going on 9. Now she's a teenager.

This was a very interesting scenario - travelling with a teenager and two twin toddler girls. I'll have to say that the driving down the coast was very intense. We came across lots of different weather, much of it intense, as we encountered severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours. We also encountered the humidity and heat of the South, to which we all accounted for from the very start.

The most difficult part of the journey, I suppose, would have been the travelling on the Interstate Highways, and in particular I-95. We were involved in two (2) jams on the highway, both of which lasted for close to an hour, and both of which were during the day in some record heat. Then when you added the masses of vehicles and exhausts and occasional road rage, it made for some very difficult moments inside our Windstar. Fortunately, my wife is a saint and our girls did really well, considering they never travelled this far with us before. But I know that I'm not really interested in driving this way again for some time to come - not this "over 3,000 mile" kind of deal.

In the end, I'm glad we had plenty of water and snacks available on the inside, and that we had a VCR in our Windstar. It made the trip a little less hectic. I think I've heard enough of a couple Barney videos for a lifetime, though, and some Sing-Along Songs from Disney.

Our last really "hairy" moment on the Highway happened just outside of Springfield, Mass, on Interstate 91. As we were moving along smoothly, we suddenly saw a pickup truck ahead of us "dead in the road" - just sitting there - and we thank God that an accident didn't occur. I don't know what possessed this driver to stop in a four lane highway, with the speed close to 65 MPH all around him, but I know the only thing we heard when we just missed an accident, was the honking of the car behind us as he thought we were at fault. A few minutes later, after our hearts stopped beating wildly, we again were grateful for an uneventful trip, in that we hadn't come this close to any kind of tragedy in the two and half weeks on the road.

It was a pleasant journey, and I guess if I was asked to do it again, and I had enough vacation time on the books, I just...might...be...tempted. After all, when I got back to work, it seemed like I'd never left. And it was nice to finally sleep in our own beds.
