The La Quinta listings call this the La Quinta for Fort Worth West and Medical Center. OK, so the Medical Center is 15 minutes away. Technically this Inn is in White Settlement. It's a fast 15 minutes to downtown also. About 1 hour 15 minutes from downtown Dallas. It has the advantage of reasonable prices (senior and frequent stay discounts), safe location for visitors and a really nice free breakfast. Plenty of parking for large SUV's, trailors or whatever else people take along with them on the road. Very good services available in the area. Also 10 minutes from the Cultural District and the headquarters for the annual Fort Worth Stock Show. Within 15 minutes of just about every kind of churc...Read More

Lockheed Martin Bomber Factory

North of Interstate Highway I-30 at the exit for hwy 341 north until you run out of road. Hwy 341 parallels the 18,000 feet runway shared by Lockheed Martin and the Naval Air Station. DO NOT drive past the guard onto Lockheed Martin property. Instead turn left and work your way west and north around the factory property--but stay on the public streets. From end to end this factory, which is the longest in the world, over one mile in length. Raw materials go in at the south end and F-16's fly out of the north end. This factory has had several names over the years: Conveyor, General Dynamics and now Lockheed Martin. Built 'way out in the country' to build airplanes during World War II, the...Read More

We spent much of this past weekend shopping. Likely the best kept secret in the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex area is the fact that there's plenty of brand name shopping in White Settlement and along the extreme west side of Fort Worth that's NOT CROWDED! Folks it's worth the drive to get to a mall or the mega stores where you can both get a parking space and get waited on! A word to the wise if sufficient!

White Settlement, a patriotic history

Story/Tip

Prairie Photo, White Settlement, Texas
Quote:
The Texas prairie rolled lonely from the western boundry of the city of Fort Worth as far as the horizon and imagination permitted. The threat of war and World War II itself caused the Federal government to expand the runway at what we knew for years as Carswell Air Force Base (now Naval Air Station Fort Worth. 18,000 feet of runway, over 300 days a year of favorable flying weather and a hard working available work force, caused the huge Air Force Plant #4 to be built on the west side of the long, long runway. It was, however, with gas & rubber rationing, a long way to and from town for the workers. Initially rather crude housing units were built for some workers in what became the city of Whit...Read More
