Havin' Fun in Saint Martin

A July 2004 trip to St. Maarten/St. Martin by DJHutchison

Gorgeous beaches and great food. Terrific scuba diving (wrecks and reefs). Use Scuba Fun in Anse Marcel (talk to Antoine). Great sunsets at Grand Case and sunrise at Orient Beach. Lots to do. Butterfly Farm, horseback riding, watersports, shop, and sunbathe at optional clothing Orient Beach. Oo la la, Qui?

We couldn't get a timeshare, so we opted for the GC Beach Club. We didn't miss... All the amenities of a timeshare, we had a great suite (one-bedroom loft, full kitchen with microwave, one bath, living/dining area, balcony overlooking the beach), water sports, snorkeling, scuba diving operator, great housekeeping staff, friendly cat who visits everyone, plenty of parking, laundry security, great ambient lighting at night, plenty of room without crowding your neighbor, and not a huge resort (about 100 rooms). Terrific friendly and helpful French staff. Walking distance to fine dining and eateries. Highly recommended.

Bon Sour! The Sunset Care overlooks the beautiful Caribbean horizon. As the sun lazily slips away for the evening, you can see the evening lights of Anguilla twinkle in the distance. A truly romantic evening, the waves lap the beach, the bougainvillea and local flowers sway in the tropical breeze, all the while the music softly plays in the background. The food is sumptuous too! Try the Salmon and Shrimp Penne in a light wine cream sauce...it is sheer heaven! After dining, walk over toward the Grand Case Beach Club waterfront and sit under the trees or near the beachfront. A truly enchanting evening.

Scuba DivingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

We did 10 dives per person and paid $375.00 each. Found their rates comparable to other Caribbean islands. Covered boat holds about 10-12 divers. Dive masters are French, Dutch, and English chaps. Depending on your expertise and preferences, there are more than 50 dive sites (some aren't on the maps). We chose the less frequented dive sites and dove in the morning (better clarity). We went to one site that had three wrecks, a bridge, and reef--an easy 50-foot dive for about 45 minutes. The "Tugboat" is another great site, take pictures because the backdrop of sun against the boat silhouette with hundreds of fish is breathtaking. Of course, we forgot to take ours. Plenty of turtles, eels, rays, shark, lobster, varieties of fish, octopus, urchins, spiders, crab, etc. Nice reef systems not yet spoilt by overdiving. Happy Diving!!
