A Day in Plymouth

A September 1997 trip to Plymouth by AnaMH

The Mayflower IIMore Photos

I had a day to spare while in Boston for business, so I travelled to Plymouth. This small town isn't very special looking but it is packed with history. A nice place to go and get a history lesson.

Plymouth
I don't have many pictures because my camera went haywire aboard the Mayflower II and the costumed captain was nice enough to try and help me figure it out. No Luck! This made for a strange bad memory though.

I loved the Plymouth Planation and all of its history and knowledge to be passed on.

The Pilgrim Hall Museum was interesting and packed with artifacts.

Pilgrim-Memorial Park had the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock and excellent views of the bay.

A trip aboard the Mayflower II is quite an experience. I don't think I would have made the journay!!

Quick Tips:

I went in fall and the weather was wonderful. A bit cold but very clear. The town was close to be deserted.

Best Way To Get Around:

Most every place can be reached on foot. The drive from Boston takes about 40 minutes.

I chose the restaurant for lunch due to its closeness to Plymouth Rock, a 2 minute walk. I wanted somewhere quiet to ponder what I had seen so far. This was the place and the view of the ocean is spectacular. The specialties are beef and seafood. I had a seafood combo with fried clams, shrimps & scallops.

Attraction

This 'living' museum is incredible. This museum is dedicated to recreating the 17th century world of the pilgrims. The do their chores, cook and eat, work, build, use tools and speak the dialect of the Pilgrims. Every character has their place in the community and they will gladly tell you their story. From their voyage on the Mayflower to their current life and job at the Plantation. The homes are so interesting. They can be a bit dark and smokey.

Attraction | "Mayflower II"

The Mayflower II
The ship was built using designs, tools and methods similar to those used around the time of the original Mayflower's sailing. This ship arrived here in 1955.

Once you step aboard, you're hit with the thought that this is one small ship. The guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. They give you a lot of insight about the people aboard and how they managed. Kids will enjoy the costumed captain!

Plymouth RockBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The rock is supposedly all legend started in the late 18th century. No one knows for sure if any of the pilgrims ever stepped on the big rock that was chosen as 'Plymouth Rock'. Over the years, I was told, it has been chpped away by sovenior hunters. The rock now sits in a pit surrounded by a Greek-style temple like building built in 1920 to celebrate the 300th anniversery of the Pilgrim's Landing. Never having seen Plymouth Rock before I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't impressed! I understand the history and the legend around it but the rock is unimpressing.

This is the state's smallest park in size, yet the most visited. The park is home to the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock. The park has beautiful landscaping and, of course, wonderful views of Plymouth Harbor, where the passengers of the Mayflower first set foot in the 'New World' in 1620. It is the site of the first permanent settlement in New England.

Attraction

This is the oldest museum in the US. It contains the most complete collection of Pilgrim possessions, including Peregrine White's cradle and Myles Standish's sword. The guides were very helpful and the exhibits are very intersting.
