Partying with the natives in the Amazon.

A February 2002 trip to Amazon River by scorch99

Traveling through the thick jungle, we traveled for three hours by speed boat down the Amazon River to a small village deep in the Amazon rainforest. Here we celebrated Carnival with the villagers and had a real life "survivor trial".

Village Girl
Our most memorable moment was when we were invited to celebrate Carnival with a small village deep in the Amazon Jungle. This was the village that our guide’s girlfriend lived in and was well off the beaten tourist track. In fact, it seemed like the majority of the villagers had never seen an outsider before.

The celebrations consisted of dancing around a tall pole with rags and pots on the top while the adults took turns chopping the pole with a machete. While this was going on, the children would throw water and mud at us while a local band was playing some native music.

After the festivities, we were invited into the main hut, where we were given a drink. After drinking the "Chunky" alcoholic beverage, we found out how it was made... the women would sit around a pot chewing sugar cane and spitting it into the pot. This mash would then ferment, and make their alcoholic beverage. Yum.

Quick Tips:

When looking for a lodge to stay in, do not book ahead of time. Go to Iquitos and head to the tourist office. From there you can see what all the lodges are like and read customer reviews. Then go to the lodge headquarters and negotiate your stay there. You well save large amounts of money by doing it this way.

Best Way To Get Around:

In Iquitos, there is only one way to get around. Three-wheeler motorcycle taxis, which are everywhere.

Our Guide Naycer
Muyana is an excellent lodge upstream from Iquitos. It is one of the most remote lodges, taking 3 hours by speedboat to arrive there. The lodgings are in private primitive cabins with private shower and toilet. The entire lodge has no electricity and is very charming. The food is absolutely fantastic and consists of mainly local foods. Our guide’s name was Naycer and we couldn't have asked for a better one. Of the dozen or so lodges available, I think Muyana gives an excellent experience at a budget price.

Attraction

If you can, come to Iquitos during Carnival in February. The climax is a large parade put on by all the surrounding tribes through downtown Iquitos. If you get a chance, try and catch the celebration in one of the villages. We had this opportunity and it is probably the fondest memory of all my travels.

Jurassic Park is a zoo close to Iquitos. Take a 20-minute boat ride which you can hire at the harbour. At Jurassic Park, you can come face to face with all the native animals of the Amazon, including aardvarks, sloths, monkeys, and anacondas.

Attraction

Belen Market
Belen is one of the areas of town that spends much of its time underwater. The houses are built up on stilts to avoid the high water in the spring. This is where you can get a true taste of the Amazon culture in the daily markets that take place in this district.
