Low Country Paradise

A travel journal to Hilton Head by AnaMH

Hilton Head is one of my favorite weekend paradise places! Let’s see it has beaches, shopping (outlet malls galore), fine dining, excellent resort and villas for rent, the gorgeous Low Country and oh, did I forget, golf.

A memory I will never forget is a sunset boat ride through the Low Country coast. The sun light twinkling on two playful dolphins.

A few of my best times on Hilton Head are centered around a few rounds of golf with my nephews. Watching them over the years develop in age and in golfing experience. Sad to say but one still swings the club like the baseball player that he is!

The dining on this island is incredible. From fine dining to regular pizza shops, it's all good here. I remember eating pizza at about 2am one Saturday night and thinking it was the best I ever had. The pizza place is no longer there.

Spending a week at Hilton and wondering if this was work????

Quick Tips:

The summer months can be brutally hot and insects love the season.

Best Way To Get Around:

There are hotel-type rooms but we stay in a apartment style villa. We usually get a one bedroom with a king size bed, 1 1/2 bathrooms with a jacuzzi in master bathroom. They also include a full kitchen, washer/dryer, dining room, full living room with two sofa, one pulling out to a queen size bed. They also have a private balcony. To enter the complex, you have to use the key provided for the parking gates. The villa come up to 4 bedrooms.

I personally would rather stay here than in a hotel style room. It's easier and almost like coming home after a hard day of playing.

The dining room has a glass ceiling, which complements the decor. The rooms are warm and so full of light! I'm a shrimp lover and this place was made for me. I had a shrimp appetizer with red pepper sauce. They have excellent beef, pasta and chicken as well.

I love the tables with a view of the ponds. We spent one meal laughing and watching the adventures of a turtle. The food here is simple but very very good. The wings are excellent and the sauces exceptional, including Maple Poppyseed Mustard. It was a bit weird at first but it did grow on me. They have a wide selection of brews but we never sampled them.

The restaurant is housed in a building that resembles a farmhouse next to many live-oak trees. The inside is charming and very quaint. The pictures on the wall are interesting and sure make for great conversation. The Carolina crab cakes are heaven! Another of our group had the Seafood Cassoulet and still says its the best she ever had. The menu has plenty of game and it is excellent.

Robert Trent Jones course
Robert Trent Jones ---The signature hole here is the 10th. This par-5 is only one of two oceanfront holes on Hilton Head. There is lots of lagoon water surrounding more than half of the holes. It might be a good idea to bring some extra golf balls :-)

The pros here are very knowledgable and friendly. Several times, I have left my nephews at the golf school and they have had a great time. I recommend this to parents. It's a way for them to play while you do other things.

There are 5 golf areas on Palmetto Dune == Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio, Robert Cupp, Arthur Hills at both Palmetto Dunes and Palmetto Hills.

Attraction

The entire length of the 12 miles of beaches on Hilton Head is open to the public. So you can walk the entire beach, if you want. 4 of the beaches have parking available. The waters are warm and the beach is spotless. The land of the beaches is usually private homes or resorts, so that is off limits. Grab a chair, a book and get ready to have a great time.

When I stayed at the Hilton, the beach was one of the best. You can get to it even if you're not staying there because there is a public access area nearby.

Sea Pines Planatation
This course is home to the MCI Classic - The Heritage of Golf every April and once you play it, you will know why the pros fear the 18th hole. The greens are small and very well-protected so shotmaking skills are required! You don't need overpowering shots on this course, just well placed ones.

Over the years, we have only played here a few times, since we don't stay at the resort. Tee times are very difficult to come by without being a guest.
