Weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake

This place turned out to be a big disappointment. My friend and I had decided to stay there based on the glowing reviews posted on tripadvisor.com. I have very strong reasons to believe, like other guests who expressed the same opinion in other reviews on that website, that the owner of the said B&B (or someone linked to her) has been writing most of the reviews herself; just look at the negative review dated June 6, then look at the one dated June 8. It sounds precisely like the owner justifying herself after a negative review!

Furthermore, this B&B currently shows 42 reviews (34 of them being EXTREMELY positive in tone and content), and the most reviews you'll find on tripadvisor for any other hotel in this town is less than 10!

I advise caution on your part if you decide to book a room there based on the favourable reviews; the place is very clean and is well-located, true, but the owner is very strict and inflexible. It doesn't make for a very pleasant stay, especially when you have to go through the breakfast "ordeal" in the morning, where the hostess serves uninspiring food in the most formal of settings while gloating about how much guests enjoy her "delicious and sumptuous three-course breakfasts".

We feel we were cheated by the false reviews, and for this reason, we do not recommend this place. We feel that a business establishment that makes false claims does not deserve to be encouraged.

My friend and I both started our meal with an order of brushetta, which was too heavy on the onions and the herbs and, in spite of a generous portion, turned out to be disappointing.

We both had pasta for our main course, perhaps not such a wise decision since the place is a rotisserie. But who can prepare bad pasta, you ask? Well, they can! Both of our choices turned out to be greasy and rather tasteless--once again a major disappointment--but I guess it is not so unusual for restaurants located right on the "strip" (i.e., Queen Street).

In spite of the mediocre food, our waitress was very pleasant and did the best she could under the circumstances.

An absolutely beautiful setting, and food and wine to match!

Start off your experience with a glass of expertly chilled Trius brut, the closest thing to real champagne you'll find on this side of the Atlantic.

The menu is inviting, and you'll likely need a bit of time to make up your mind. I highly recommend the fish of the day (especially if it happens to be halibut), but the Tour of Niagara, a sampling of regionally inspired specialties, is also a sure bet.

Expensive, but if you feel like a splurge, this is definitely the place to do it in NOTL.
