Southern California Fun in the Sun!

A May 2004 trip to Los Angeles by jkpike

Quote: I am originally from Southern California and still have family living there. So, we are very familiar with all the sights and hotspots. I often travel there with my husband and two young daughters, ages 2 and 4.

I went to school in Los Angeles, and this has to be one of my personal favorites for Great Food! I highly recommend the BBQ Chicken Pizza... it's so good they have made a frozen pizza that is sold in select markets in the west coast! The drinks here are great as well, good for a dinner out with the girls or maybe even a date night with your hubby. But, don't feel like you can't bring the kids. This place is kid-friendly too and has meals that the kids will love.

Character dining is the only way to go when you have little children that are enamored with the Disney characters. Share an amazing experience with Goofy and his pals at this winningly whimsical buffet with many inventive culinary surprises. Goofy's Kitchen is a great place to throw birthday parties too, so if you are celebrating a big day, be sure and come party Disney-style! Plenty of great choices for kids of all ages, including: Mickey Mouse shaped waffles, Breakfast lasagna, peanut butter and jelly pizza and Goofy's Hot Chocolate Cake. Don't forget to bring your cameras to take a souvenir snapshot of your Gawrsh-darn favorite Disney Character. We visited with Minnie Mouse, Goofy's nephew, Plut...Read More

Disneyland is great, but I'm going to give you some insight on how to see the best things in the park: First get a map! Look up which characters your children are interested in seeing and selectively go to those spots during their viewing time. Don't just walk aimlessly looking for characters or you won't find them. Each character now has a particular location in the park that they are stationed and a schedule by which you can come visit them. Get a Disney FASTPASS as often as possible. This is a way to avoid the long lines, not like the old days of waiting in line for hours at a time. Again, look at the map and plan out what rides are a must for your visit that day. Get a Disney...Read More

Although this park is adjoined with Disneyland, a separate ticket is required, or you must have purchased a special ticket that will get you into both parks (which of course is more expensive). California Adventure is a fun place, but not created for the very young or very old... unlike Disneyland. It doesn't have many kiddie style rides for very young kids and the cool rides have some pretty strict height requirements. This is a good park for kids about seven and up. My daughter was four the last time we visited and she couldn't ride much... we spent most of our time in the Bug's Life area. This was cool to her because she's real keen on this movie and its characters. She even got to take a pic...Read More

Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens

Attraction | "The Huntington"

Quote:
The Huntington is an Art Gallery, Library, and botanical gardens. All of which are spectacular. I studied Art History at UCLA and actually took a class at the Huntington, where our classroom was right in front of the artwork on the floor of the museum! The Art Collections are distinguished by their specialized character and elegant settings. The Huntington Gallery, originally the Huntington residence, contains one of the most comprehensive collections in this country of British and French art of the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to being home to ever-popular Gainsborough Blue Boy and Lawrence's Pinkie, the Gallery also has special changing exhibitions. The Virginia Steele Scott Gallery ...Read More

Best Beaches in Southern California

SoCal Beaches Photo, San Diego, California

Best beach for kids: MARINA DEL REY - The beach has a sheltered cove so there is no big wave for mother to worry about the kids in the water. Coolest beach spot: MANHATTAN BEACH - home of famous LA athletes like Shaquille O'Neil. The beach scene resembles an episode of Baywatch. It's mostly a mid-20's crowd at the bars and night clubs. El Porto Street is known for its great surfing and boggie boarding. There's plenty of jogging and rollerblading along the Strand, which runs along the beach front. There are plenty of beach restaurants in this small, yet popular beach community. Most eccentric beach: VENICE BEACH - You'll be entertained by just walking up and down t...Read More

Like all 6 flags parks, this place is great for the young at heart and adventure seekers! Magic Mountain features some of the greatest coasters ever created and are featured on many TV shows that showcase the nation's or world's best coasters. Don't miss Viper, Batman, Freefall, Ninja, Superman, and X. If you are traveling to SoCal with teenagers, don't miss this place; they'll love it!!

As you've been reading through my SoCal journal, you've probably learned some about me and my educational background. I went to school at UCLA and studied Art History, and actually worked for over a year at this museum in the Education Department. I taught small children about art and color, or really at times the children taught us about how to view art without expectaions or rules and limitations. This museum is enormous. It features all types of art from all different cultures and all types of art movements in the permanent collections. That includes American Art, Ancient and Islamic Art, Chinese and Korean Art, Costume and Textiles Decorative Art, Japanese Art, Modern and Contem...Read More

Queen Mary

Attraction

Quote:
This is an extraordinary experience on a huge boat, the Queen Mary. This boat does not sail, it's in the water, but permanently docked for tours, hotel accommodations, and fine dining. I have experienced all three of these activities and they make Southern California a unique experience. The self-guided tour is a bit dry, but discusses the history of the boat, its ghostly legends and it's functions and experiences. The fine dining is generally rented out for big parties and events like school dances (my senior prom was here) or weddings. There are 13 beautiful Art Deco Salons for events of every size and over 15,000 square feet of Outdoor Space. The hotel rooms are actually a little cramped as w...Read More
