A few years ago, I was attending a conference being held at the Metreon and wanted a hotel close to the event - "name brand" hotels (i.e., Hyatt) were too pricey, and I felt I was taking a bit of a gamble plucking an unknown hotel name "from the hat," as it were. However, budget limits drove my needs (needing a place that was $120 or less a night can be a challenge in major cities), and I went to Travelocity, and discovered Hotel Union Square, located just steps off Market Street and only 2-3 blocks from Union Square. It quickly became my favorite place to stay in San Francisco.A cable car line goes by the hotel, and the location is also very handy to bus and BART (subway) lines. Ad...Read More

Tad's Steakhouse, located on the Powell cable car line near the Union Square turnaround, has been serving up inexpensive, hearty food since 1955. I usually come here for breakfast while I'm in San Francisco, because it's next door to my favorite hotel, Hotel Union Square. But other good reasons include reasonable prices, nice staff, quick service, and yummy food. For example - their pancakes: you would think that not much can be done to make plain hotcakes much better, but I love theirs. Tad's food is simple, but that's part of their charm. They've got a variety of grilled sandwiches for $5 to $5.50; a couple of slightly more expensive "plates" for $8 to $11; and that's it. This isn't a place ...Read More

John's Grill

At nearly 100 years of being in business, John's Grill is a San Francisco dining landmark. Tucked away on Ellis Street around the corner from the Powell Street/Union Square cable car turnaround, John's has a surprisingly low volume of tourists. You're more likely to be rubbing elbows (literally, when the place gets crowded) with local businessmen over a leisurely lunch or quiet dinner. The decor has changed little here, with dark woods, tables clustered close, and celebrity photographs - both classic and modern - lining the walls. You would half expect Sam Spade, the hero of The Maltese ...Read More

Have you ever been on vacation and gone to a restaurant that was so good you wish they'd open one in your hometown? San Francisco's Maya is that restaurant for me.Chef Richard Sandoval has created a beautiful space, with rich colors, comfortable seating, and stylish decor. The bar area is dominated by a rustic-style wood bar; the dining area feels light and airy by day, and romantic by night. Fresh-made avocado dip is a reliable starter. I particularly enjoyed the ceviche de mahi mahi, which had just the right amount of spice to enhance the fish. Appeti...Read More

Swig

Swig is a relatively new club created out of the space that the old Blue Lamp used to occupy at 571 Geary Street. The storefront is deceptively simple; large paned windows with a modest triangular sign reading 'Swig' mark the locale. It's easy walking distance from Union Square - it's actually in an area known as 'the Tenderloin', which seems to be trying to reinvent its image lately as a crop of clubs, bars, restaurants, and hip hotels pop up in the neighborhood. However, Swig isn't simply a nightclub; it's one of the growing popular style of clubs that spend their day under one kind of persona...Read More

The De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park has attracted visitors since 1895. The original building for the De Young dated from the California Midwinter International Exposition in 1894. Eventually, structural issues and the growing collection dictated the need for a new building, and the new De Young - with a quarter million of square footage, now has over twice the exhibition space of the original - opened its doors in 2005. The De Young is particularly known for its displays of modern art, and Pan-American art. The eclectic collection ranges from South American s...Read More
