Overview

You could easily enjoy a great game of soccer played by Clube Atletico Mineiro or by Cruzeiro Esportes Clube. A short distance could take you to a city called Ouro Preto 'Black Gold.' It is very cultural as a visit there. The night clubs are very good too. Make sure that you read about local heros; Tiradentes and Aleijadinho.

Quick Tips:

Make sure that you enjoy the many side trips while traveling in Minas Gerais, 'General Mines.' It is still rich in mineral deposits to this day.

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportaion is always very inexpensive, especially with the raise in the US dollar in comparison to the brazilian Real. I suggest buses since it is always a perfect opportunity to meet new people, or see aspects at a slower pace. Have fun!

The Mineiro Athletic Clube of soccer is also known locally as Galo; 'Cock', a fighting rooster. A strong mascot rooster which symbolizes a revenger to fight to the end. Most of their games are played at Governor Magalhaes Pinto Stadium, also known as Mineirao. It is the second largest covered stadium in the world and can serve 90,000 spectators due to safety. Before, it was common to hold 130,000 spectators. They also play at a smaller stadium called; Raimundo Sampaio Stadim, locally known as Independencia. You are to see a good game of soccer as this team is known to win a ratio of almost 60% of its games. Some good close games are best to view, so as to be more exciting. Galoucura is Atletico's largest fan club. Their two main colors are black and white stripes.

A Obra is a mixture of show/nightclub and bar with facilities to serve 200 clients. They are open Wednesday to Saturday,from 9:30 pm until the last client departs in the very early next morning hours. They offer live bands as well as dj's. The most interesting segment of this bar is that all tables are not separated in the noraml fashion, but closely placed beside each other to allow for more meeting of new friends. The club is located almost on the corner intersection of Avenida Getulio Vargas, in the suburb called Savassi.

Attraction

Bar Bem Brasil is a small outdoor cafe style gathering place. It is reasonably priced and you will not miss their sign. It looks like a 50-story billboard. LOL They are located at the corner of Avenida General Carlos Guedes, a continuation of Avenida Portugal.

Their meals are very good and a good beer doesn't hurt too. Their Coxinha and Quibe are good. They are arabic battered snacks, filled with superb meat and seasonings.

Be careful not to drink to much of a native type of drink called 'pinga', distilled from pure sugercane. It has a kick you will not want to receive. Try it with some salt and lemon. Some brands go down smooth and (you think) weak, but try to stand up too fast and you will see the floor before you know it. LOL Quibe

Story/Tip

Belo Horizonte, the first modern Brazilian city to spring from an architect's drawing board, was especially designed for its role as the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Its wide, landscaped avenues and carefully planned residential suburbs have, however, suffered the impact of the country's high rate of urbanization. Belo Horizonte is the distribution and processing center of a rich agricultural and mining region and the nucleus of a burgeoning industrial complex. Its chief manufactures are steel, steel products, automobiles, and textiles. Gold, manganese, and gem stones of the surrounding region are processed in the city. Belo Horizonte is also a leading cultural center, with three universities, a historical museum, numerous libraries, and sports stadiums. Because of its altitude (850m) the climate is refreshing and cool. It has a population of about 2.5 million inhabitants, and covers an area of 333 sq. km.
