A June 2004 trip to Charleston by Ron Riggs

My husband and I recently returned from a trip to Charleston, SC. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We stayed at the Lodge Alley Inn in the historic district of Charleston. It was about one block from the old market and within walking distance of the battery.

Our accommodations were very nice. We had a one bedroom loft apartment with a full kitchen. You could see the market from our window. The lodge provides free sherry and cookies to its guests every afternoon.

We were somewhat disappointed in the Boone Hall tour. It is a beautiful house, but it was only built in the early 1930s. Also, we were only allowed to see three rooms on the ground floor. They did not allow us upstairs, which I could have understood if someone had been living in them, but no one lives in the house anymore. The gardens could have been very beautiful, but they were somewhat neglected. We felt the advertising for the plantation was somewhat misleading although not technically inaccurate. For what you actually got to see, I thought it was overpriced.

The market was very interesting. It reminded me a lot of the market in the French Quarter in New Orleans. They had some nice stuff to buy and some of what my husband refers to as "junk." They had a lot of sweet grass baskets, but I did not purchase one because I couldn't afford the nice ones, and I didn't want one of the smaller ones. I did purchase some nice silver jewelry with semi-precious stones at reasonable prices. One stall in particular had a very nice selection.

This house has remained standing since it was built in the early 1700's. It is remarkable and well preserved considering all it has been through (earthquake, hurricane, and 2 wars). It has never had electricity nor plumbing added and so is very much as it was when it was built. I think it would make it more attractive if it were repainted inside and furnished to reflect the time period when it was built.
