The word is out. Ambergris Caye is a tropical paradise lined with swaying palm trees, long stretches of pristine beach and friendly people. Once a sleepy fishing village now turned into an exploding tourist spot. Go soon before it's too crowded!

There is a plethora of places for you to stay -Weatherworn clapboard guesthouses as well as new modern pristine resorts grace the beaches of Ambergris. Name any water sport and you'll find it here and the most important sports to partake in are either diving or snorkeling as here you have an endless wall of barrier reef running the lenghth of the caye.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

You'll no doubt arrive in the country by plane to Belize City. From there it's easy to catch one of the many flights a day run by Tropic A or Maya airlines. My last trip was almost two years ago and the price was about RT. Another way to access the caye is by water shuttle. These leave several times a day from the dock and stop at Caye Caulker enroute to San Pedro village on Ambergris. Once you arrive you'll probably want to walk just about anywhere you go unless you're staying at one of the resorts at the far end of the island in which case you'll catch a taxi. Golf carts, believe it or not, are also available both for rent and for 'taxi' about the island!
This is a large resort with many (50-60) thatched roof cabanas waiting for your enjoyment. Since this is probably the nicest place on the caye to stay, many honeymooners stay here. Every modern convenience is available and you'll leave feeling like you've been pampered in the special way only Belizean's can pamper. The resort has it's own dive boat and will arrange any activity you want - sailing, snorkeling, massages, tours, anything! It's a litle expensive but well worth it. Definitely not the place though for the budget traveler- read on for those recomendations.

Hotel

This friendly place is certainly adequate especially if you are going to be using it simply to bath and sleep. Simply furnished and reasonably clean. For the price ($35/double) two years ago, you can't beat it on Ambergris and the entire family of this family run B & B will go out of their way to help you arrange any tours, water sports etc. Note: very 'family friendly' so if you're traveling with children this is the place!

Restaurant | "Beach Bar-B-que"

Beach bar-b-ques are a fun dining option on Ambergris. Several times a week various resorts sponsor a large 'Beach Bar-b-que'. Check with the desk wherever you are staying as they all seem to know the places and times for these. I went to a feast of a bar-b-que put on by coconuts that was a regular 'fete de pigerarama' complete with live music and dancing until the wee morning hours. Great fun for all ages.....even this grandma! Don't miss joining at least one baqr-b-que during your stay.

Restaurant | "Sweet Basil"

This is both a grocery store and a deli cafe where you are treated to sandwiches made on fresh home-baked bread (many kinds) veggie burgers, a plethora of fresh salads and a daily special. Eat outside on the wooden tables and enjoy the warm sea breeze blowing through your hair. A great change from the traditional rice & beans!
