Grapevine Mills Mall & Fun

An April 2002 trip to Grapevine by samepenny

Grapevine is a place where wine grapes are grown, entertainment, food & shopping possibilities are endless. All within the shadow of D-FW Airport! Although Texas wine doesn't have the best reputation, the shopping in Grapevine is wonderful. We enjoy the one-of-a-kind restaurants and shopping at Grapevine Mills Outlet Mall. If you have a long layover at the airport, you can make a run to the mall. It is about 15 minutes away.

Shopping and entertainment for the whole family are primary in Grapevine as it has become a destination in itself in the D-FW area. Once a small, isolated town, Grapevine is now in the heartbeat of the Metroplex.

Quick Tips:

The old part of town is still relatively in tact. Check out Main Street for shopping and sightseeing.

Best Way To Get Around:

You have to either drive or be driven. Public transportation is nill in this area unless you want to take a train over to the Fort Worth Stockyards area.
Grapevine Mills Mall Outside
This is one of our favorate restaurants at this mall. Yes, we sometimes do go to a mall to eat. American cuisine and a recreation of a 1950's hamburger joint. Fifties music. Lots of fun. A good place to sit down and rest. Find out when you get to the mall if you need to get a reservation & get one. Busy days can be madness! Everyone wants a bargain!

Listen parents, please! Children totally love this place, but the wait in line can be unbelievable.

Sometimes you have to wait in line to get a time to come back to wait in line. Yes, I know that's awful, but children think that the atmosphere (fish tanks, light shows, animated animals) and the food are all worth whatever parents have to do to get them into this place. I think it's good, but children are wild for it.

I'm amazed at the wide variety of activites offered for both children and adults. The after-school care learn-to-skate program is very popular. All of the excitment of the Stanley Cup sent hoards of boys out to the rink to learn to skate. How many little girls have dreams of Olympic medals? Of course the serious skaters are there, but this is also a good place to skate and cool off on a hot day. Birthday parties held here. Click here for Polar Ice.

This sign is the fake saloon is kidding!
This is the mall where I had my first experience with a mega mall. It is! Entirely too big to be undertaken in one day, it offers the additional advantage to shoppers of being an outlet that's covered. Most outlet malls in this part of the world have the shops surrounding massive parking lots. You can shop Grapevine Mills in all kinds of weather. My favorite stores: Saks Fifth Avenue- Suite 211 (972) 724-3500 and Virgin Megastore (Records & books)-Suite 232 (972) 874-9333. You can shop and get plenty of exercise at the same time.

We were all pleased and surprised when it was announced that this store was coming to North Texas. It is huge, wonderful (if you are so inclined) and a great place for Dad and the boys, while Mom and the girls are at the Grapevine Mills Mall. It's so big that you can't see across it. The inventory is impressive. What fun for the outdoor-minded guys and gals. A destination in itself (motels have opened up nearby). Open every day except Christmas. Historic District
Downtown Grapevine is an interesting place to shop. Even on a pre-Christmas Saturday, we found easy parking places. Lots of nice decorations and holiday oriented shops. Very small town and relatively unspoiled in spite of its proximity to large cities.

This place is big, big even by Texan standards. It's a good hour tour just to see everything. Mr. Stacy was on duty, visiting with shoppers in this brand new mega-store. Very friendly atmosphere. He guarantees good prices! If it isn't in this store, you likely don't need it. (817) 424-8800.

Attraction

Palace Theater
This 'art moderne' theater was totally renovated very recently. Saved from the wrecking ball by a strong local effort, over $5.1 million was put into this complex bringing the building up to modern safety and access codes as well as installing modern lighting and audio systems. Shall we also mention the air conditioning? Yes, that does work very well. Home to both the Grapevine Opry (817) 481-8733 and other local productions.

As the new OperyLand Hotel opens in April '04, this small town will become an even strong tourist destination. The Palace Theater is an anchor for the Historic District.

Parking is on the street where you can find it and also in public lots. Grapevine is getting to the point in popularity where parking is now an issue. What would the old timer's think? Not long ago a panther could have napped on Main Street. Handy to many fine restaurants in all price ranges. A few minutes by car north of DFW International Airport. Five minutes walk north of the Tarantula Train station.

Attraction | "Gazebo"

Gazebo on Main Street
The Gazebo is the centerpoint for many of the activities in Grapevine. A shady spot to rest on a very hot summer day or a nice place to plan to meet friends. Used as a bandstand and also a speaker's platform for VIP's, this Gazebo is of the traditional design that was often found in small towns across America. About 2 blocks north of the information center. A wee bit of public parking, but don't count on finding a space on Saturdays. At least 3 shops that sell ice cream are close to this nice park.
