A June 2004 trip to Atlanta by barbara

The Wyndham Hotel in Vinings looks at first glance like one of the many mansions you might find on prestigious West Paces Ferry Road. Perched above a two-tiered parking lot, it's a white building with a Southern style porch complete with white wicker rocking chairs. Inside, the front lobby decor is as conservative as the city where the hotel is located -- think oils of horses in gilded frames -- yet it is still inviting with a glass-encased aviary to one side that will delight children. A sparkling pool can be seen through the lobby's back windows. When I worked near Vinings a couple of years ago, my company booked one of the Wyndham banquet rooms to host a training class. Both the spa...Read More

The Grand Hyatt is considered one of the absolute nicest hotels in Atlanta. As soon as you enter the lobby with its sparkling chandeliers, tall columns, and glistening marble floors, you know you’re in for a bit of pampering. Located in the heart of Buckhead near Phipps Plaza and Lenox, the Hyatt offers easy access to all of the City of Trees. Considered a top tier hotel by the likes of Conde Nast Travel, the hotel often plays host to the rich and powerful. For instance, Bill Clinton has stayed in the luxurious Presidential Suite! But Republicans and Democrats alike can appreciate having fax machines, photocopiers, and multiple phone lines at their disposal in their rooms! ...Read More

The best thing about the Sheraton is its location across the street from Lenox Mall. When I walked into the front lobby, I thought this 3 star hotel wasn’t as opulent as some of the other hotels in the same neighborhood, but the red and gold color schemes were still inviting and warm. Several guests were seated to the right in cushy chairs in the bar/lounge watching a baseball game on a flat screen TV. While I was surprised to smell a hint of cigarette smoke here, my overall impression was the hotel was well maintained and clean. You'll find the check-in desk to the left. Features worthy of note? The Sheraton is known for having sweet sleeper beds. There’s a tasteful model "ro...Read More

The La Quinta offers comfortable lodging without luxury prices. It’s located (literally) within spitting distance of Home Depot’s towering World Headquarters, so it has made a business out of making the business traveler happy. Church and tour groups also love the La Quinta because of its good value standard. Two types of rooms are available to guests. Both the double and the king rooms have a small sitting area (a la "suite"), but the king offers a sleeper sofa. The king also has a fridge and microwave, which makes it especially convenient for guests on a budget… or guests who don’t have the time to enjoy some of the marvelous restaurants like SoHo, Garrisons, and Canoe, which are ...Read More

I stayed with my husband one night at the Westin in Buckhead back when the property was the Swissotel. Other than the name above the door, how else has the place changed? Well, I think it’s only improved . . . and is improving. A favorite with business travelers who like comfort in Atlanta, the Westin competes primarily with the Grand Hyatt and the Ritz. One of the big draws here is the absolutely fabulous Palm Restaurant on the first floor, which is known for its great steaks and famous clientele. Another draw is the location. Across the street from Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza, the Westin offers easy access to all Atlanta has to offer. What are the rooms like? When I walked in...Read More

I had to attend a luncheon held at the Marietta Conference Center & Resort, and I found myself wandering the grounds, poking through rooms, and wondering what it would be like to spend the night. This beautiful resort has been the setting for many a wedding reception for good reason. It offers elegance, luxury, and history. The Brumby Hall historic home, which is located on the grounds along with its beautiful gardens, was first built in 1851! Once the site of the Georgia Military Institute, the hotel's lobby is adorned with oil paintings of young cadets from that era. There's even a cannon you'll find tucked to one side if you take a right from the main lobby towards the ballroom!...Read More

The Microtel Inn offers budget, extended stay lodging. This location is easy to find. Take the #15 Exit off I-285, and you'll see it across the street from a U-Haul center. What were my impressions? The outside of the gray building is well maintained. Several crepe myrtles were blooming when I pulled into the parking lot. When I pushed open the front door, I noticed the lobby was separated from an outside room "area" by another door. Apparently, guests of the Inn need to have a key to access the lobby in the evenings. If you haven't checked in yet and you arrive at the property late at night, you buzz for the front desk attendant who speaks to you through a bank-teller-ty...Read More

The W in Atlanta is a cool hotel. Unlike so many other lodging options in the area, this place has personality. With 274 rooms, almost half of which are suites, the W caters to business travelers . . . but I don't think the stodgy kind who wear three piece suits. This hotel is for the young executives who threw out their ties and made business casual part of daily style. From my first step into the front lobby I could see the decor is all clean lines with a hint of Asian influence. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia is always popular with business travelers and large family groups. My husband has stayed here before and has always been pleased with the service. I, too, found the staff to be extremely helpful and considerate. When you enter the lobby, you'll feel as if you've wandered into a kind of tropical retreat. Lush foilage, a black olive tree and an Australia tree fern are all growing near bubbling fountains. Children will delight at the orange fish swimming in the pools of water. The Prime Hotel and Suites just took over what used to be the Wyndham Garden Atlanta Perimeter location. This is the first hotel of its type in Atlanta. In fact, there is only one other Prime property in the Southeast, and that's in Tennessee. So, needless to say, I didn't know what to expect when I stepped into the lobby in June 2004. At the moment, the Prime still has the Wyndham decor. The lobby is fairly conservative with hardbound books on the shelves that surround a small fireplace. I chuckled when I noticed a lot of these books weren't the expected classics like Moby Dick or Gone with the Wind but rather old Algebra textbooks! Driving to the Best Western I noticed the worn down look of many of the buildings that seems to be a basic characteristic of any neighborhood near any airport in the United States. A lumbering freight train slowly click-clacked down the tracks that run parallel to the road on which the Best Western is located. The Greyhound Bus Station is less than a mile away. The hotel itself has a somewhat worn exterior, too, so I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped inside the front door. To the left of the front entrance is a small gift shop offering tourists all the basic fare: t-shirts and Atlanta Braves coffee mugs. The Wyndham is located right off I-75 and the Marietta loop. The building towers over the interstate, so it's easy to find. It's basically a hotel for the business traveler. I don't want to be cliche, but this place really is a home away from home for a lot of men and women who consistently commute from a different city to Atlanta when they go to work for the week. In fact the front desk staff knows the name of a handful of repeat stayers who have also gotten to know each other downstairs in the evenings. There's a bar open until midnight which seems to take on a Cheers atmosphere as employees from different companies wind down together. There's also a full service restaurant that...Read More

The Wyndham Atlanta is in the heart of the city... literally. Pull your car up to the door for Valet Parking ($18/night) and check into the hotel. The large lobby with its marble floors and transitional chandeliers sets the mood for a comfortable stay. Classical music drifts from an invisible sound system. A sitting area with a tall china cabinet filled with decorative plates reflects the conservative decor throughout much of the building. This is a nice hotel. Some Amenites? Downstairs you'll find Luntique Cafe. With multi-colored light shades and an expansive mural on one wall, this place has a funky feel I like. When we first moved to the Atlanta area, we spent several nights at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. It is an atrium-style hotel that is by the Galleria specialty mall on the north side of Atlanta. Like all luxury hotels, it offers spacious rooms and wonderful amenities. I spread out on my comfy bed, perused the room service menu, and watched the TV in its tall armoir one afternoon while I waited for the real estate agent. I thought about visiting the full-service day spa or taking a few laps in the indoor pool. For anyone in Atlanta for work, there is high-speed Internet access in all the the rooms. The Extended Stay America is a great place for the business traveler who needs extended-budget lodging or the Atlanta visitor who doesn't care about luxury touches and is going to be in town for a week or more. The exterior sort of sums the place up. It's a very plain and generic building located near I-75 off Windy Hill. The lobby is equally non-descript, with gray walls and a single Oriental rug spread in front of the check-in desk on the tiled floor. However, staff members are very friendly and happy to help guests. The rooms themselves look like any other large-chain hotel room, with red comforters and dark carpet. Westin Atlanta North

After having lived in the Atlanta area for many years, we were in the city as visitors over the 2006 Christmas holidays. While Westins are normally always nice hotels, I had a specific reason for choosing this one on this particular trip. You see, we had the family dog in tow, and like the "W" hotels in the same Starwood chain, the Westin does accept four legged friends. The big difference is that the "W" doesn't have any pet designated rooms, so there is a non-refundable deposit required that is used to deep-clean after an animal has spent the night. The Westin, however, does have pet designated rooms, so the deposit of $100 is refundable minus $25 for the pet's "stay fee." ...Read More

With a lovely location across the street from the High Museum, the Marriott is well suited for any extended-stay vacation to Hot-lanta. The Palm Restaurant in the lobby of the Westin in Buckhead is an Atlanta fixture. When you walk inside, the first things you’ll notice are the many cartoon caricatures of celebrities (and some unknown regulars) painted onto the walls. When the person depicted eats at The Palm, he or she signs their autograph beneath their face. You’ll pick out favorites like Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, and the entire Lynard Skynard band up front near the hostess station. My friend and I actually sat at a table near a caricature of Arnold Swarzenegger dressed like the Terminator on a motorcycle. I noticed his sprawling signature was in place, but his wife Maria Shriver’s face isn’t signed. How...Read More

Twist is still fairly new on the Atlanta scene, but it's already made a reputation as a great place to be seen for singles. Its located in upscale Phipps Plaza, so you can park your car and shop for a while or just use the valet. Once inside the atmosphere is trendy with sleek lines, orange lighting, a giant screen TV that seems projected on the wall in the main dining room. The staff all wear black t-shirts with a variety of words on the front---"drink, eat, clean"---and one word on the back---"up." My husband and I decided to check it out on a Saturday night, and we were certainly happy we did. Toast is a great bistro for anyone who likes fine dining but wants a more casual atmosphere. There's an outside patio, but we decided to dine indoors. The open dining room, with its high ceiling, is accented with lime greens and oranges that give the place a soothing, casual atmosphere. Located in East Cobb just north of the Atlanta I-285 perimeter, Moda Salon and Spa is a great place to go for a bit of self-indulgence. I entered the brightly lit reception area, which has a small "boutique" section to one side to meet skincare needs. After checking in for my appointment, I was led past the manicure/pedicure room to a nicely appointed changing area. There I donned a spa gown and robe, putting all my street clothes into a wicker carrying bag. I flipped through a couple of magazines, sipping on cool water, in a dimly lit waiting room outfitted with comfy chairs.
