When people are thinking Gulf of Mexico, they’re thinking Florida Panhandle, but Alabama’s Gulf Shore is an interesting alternative. The two main cities along the coast are Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. For a bigger town, the city of Foley is just a 15 minute drive away. As in Florida, you’ll find the same powdery white sand beach. And when I say white, I mean it, don’t forget your sunglasses! And like in Florida, you’ll find condos for retired who are fleeing the cold, but it’s less expensive and less crowded. But hopefully, a part of it has been set aside as the Gulf State Park. Pristine beach and water are expecting you. For those who like peace and quiet, I recommend a visit from late autumn to ea...Read More

The campground of the state park is huge and well appointed. It lies in a nice wooded area, near two ponds and on the other side of the road you’ll find the State Beach Park. Sites are available for full hook-ups (30 amps hook-ups only so beware) and primitive camping. The price range is between $17 and $30 in summer. The camp also has a store, a game room, a nature center, showers and laundry rooms. The Campground also has cabins to rent.

The Gulf State Park hotel has a buffet restaurant. The morning buffet is quite popular. With huge windows facing the Gulf, it's a relaxing place to enjoy the quite sizeable breakfast buffet (but they also have lunch and dinner and seafood buffet on Friday). It's not fancy and a little kitsch with the marine decoration but it's affordable and the food quality is good.

Attraction | "Gulf State Park Beach"

Located between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, this stretch of sand lies between two heavily build up areas, like an oasis. Here, the typical Gulf beach has been preserved with dunes, sparkling white sand and blue-green waters of the Gulf. On the beach, you’ll find a mix of retired people and families. The pelicans are here too! You’ll often see them flying over and it’s quite a sight. If you come here in November, you’ll be able to see stingrays without snorkeling. It’s mating seasons and stingrays are getting close to the shore, chasing each other at top-speed . . . it’s quite funny. Buy yourselves a body board and go ahead. In spring, waves are quite big (not enough to really surf) and if you...Read More

For those who fancy anything "beachy", Surf Style is a paradise. This huge stores has plenty of it: swimsuits, shorts, towels, seashells to bring back home (if you can't find any on the beach). . . you'll spend quite a bit of time in the fladshio store (they have two other stores in the area). Their best feature? A B.Y.O.B. (build your own bikini) thing called mix-and-match where you can choose through plenty of different style tops and bottoms in many colors. It's a beach lover's heaven!
