7 Nights at 7 Coves

A June 2004 trip to Conroe by Whensthenextholiday

We saw just of very small part of what Lake Conroe has to offer. You could stay in this area for a month and not see half of whats on offer within one hour drive.

The apartment was cantilevered over Lake Conroe, which meant fishing was possible whenever we were in the apartment. The apartment was spacious and on two floors with a stunning view over the Lake. One morning we found a heron perched on the balcony.

The staff at the resort was very helpful and friendly, and tried to organise activities, example ice-cream social, and a hot dog cookout. Although the resort appeared to be full, us and two other children turned up for ice cream. We did have our very first try at jet skiing, on a concession that had only opened about 10 days before we arrived. The guys who ran it very extremely patient and encouraging to novices, and we are glad we took the plunge and explored a large part of the lake from the water. The downside to our trip was that the apartments we not very child-friendly; we were very worried that our 10 month old son could very easily have slipped through the railing on the balcony and fallen straight into the lake below.

Quick Tips:

Junction 88 of the I-45 is Candy Cane Park, a great place for the children to play on swings, slides etc and for strolling or power walking. On the same site is Conroe Aquatic Centre (a small waterpark), a fantastic day out and excellent value for money at per person for all day. Brilliant for small children. Children will also love the Children’s Museum in Houston 1500 Binz (I-45 south to Junction for Main Street, follow until it meets Binz). Again we felt this was excellent value for money with lots of hands on activities for children, how do phones work? What is electricity? There were also supervised rooms for painting and assisted small experiments. Chuck-E-Cheese is great for children. A small fee bought tokens for the children to use on games i.e. shooting baskets or riding on merry-go-rounds in return they got tickets the number depending on what they had done. Before leaving the tickets were inserted into a machine and converted into a voucher, which could then be exchanged for sweets or toys. They also served reasonably priced food.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is an absolute must for the area because the resort itself is not on any public transport route, we didn't see any taxis, and there is no restaurant or shop. The nearest shop would be about a 30-minute walk away. About 10 miles from the resort is a Wal-Mart supercentre where you can stock up on groceries.

The apartments were very spacious, all contilevered over the lake. We have a two bedroomed unit with the second bedroom being on the second floor. This bedroom was large with its en-suite bathroom, large wardrobe and set of drawers but no TV. The downstairs bedroom has en-suite with Jacuzzi bath, plenty of storage space and lots of mirrors. This bedroom also had its own TV and view of the lake. All beds were king size. The kitchen had large fridge freezer, cooker, kettle, toaster blender, coffeemaker as well as a wide range of cookinng pans and dishes. On the patio was a table and chairs, and a light. Our only reservation was the railings around the patio area. They were not child-friendly, and we were very nervous that our 10 month old son could have fallen quite easily into the lake.

Restaurant

We have always found Cracker Barrel and excellent place for breakfast. Eggs bacon and biscuits, followed by a pancake really sets us up for a days activities. Staff is friendly, and the services is usually quick and efficient. An Old Country Store shop on the same site is an excellent place to purchase gifts.

A brilliant day out! Caters for toddlers, with a soft play area, with tips and ideas for parents. A walkway with steps, inclines and waves for those practising the first tentative steps. For those more sure of foot, there are lots of hands on activities, and explanations of how things are made or how they work. Pedal a bike to generate electricity to light a bulb, how telephones were invented, carrying on right through to video phones and e-mail. There is an outside play area, and separate "classrooms" for painting and experimenting ie what will sink and what will float? Food is available at the concession stalls, or they do not object to you taking your own. For $5 per person we thought this was excellent value.
