A May 2004 trip
to Albufeira by Lor1
Quote: This was the first of two weeks in the Algarve. First-time visitors to the area, we were not disappointed. There was great weather all through and lots to do.
Krazyworld in Algoz is also fun. Again, it has swimming pools to crash out by and it has a zoo theme too. It is in the middle of nowhere, but easy to find. From Portimao, go on the Santa Bernarda Pirate Ship from the Vasco da Gama pier to visit the famous caves. It’s an excellent half-day/day trip. The boat is lovely (and has a bar) and they take you INSIDE some caves in a smaller launch. It was great fun getting in and out of that offshore! Take sun cream and hats though.
The best beaches are the smaller coves, which are located everywhere. Praia du Rocha is massive!
The on-site supermarket is limited and not as good as the big one next door to the sister hotel, Oura Praia Hotel. Go there instead, as it is only a five-minute walk away. The CPO main pool is big and cold, but the kids’ pool is warmer. The Jacuzzis were warm and cold, depending what time you went in. The staff are excellent and very helpful.
The two-bedroom unit was large and clean, with a good view over the pool area. The beds were comfy, but the apartment needed more lights for reading during the evenings if you wanted to stay in. Yeah, I am being picky here. The complimentary pack, including wine, was a nice touch.
Walking is fine, but you will get very hot. And the Algarve coast area is hilly, so there are lots of steps involved.

The hotel has only a few lifts, so you will have to climb some steps to get to your apartment. There are lots of porters, so use them for the cases. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and English is the second language. Parking is available 50m away in a secure car park as it is very limited on site.
The main pool is cold -- trust me -- but perhaps only because the weather is hot. They are building a garden/patio area where the old car park was at the beach front, next to the bowls area, but access to the beach is still ok.
