Granbury a Grand Time--UPDATES

Overview

Quote:
I love to see a show at the Granbury Opera House (not all opera), love to shop the Square and eat in very good restaurants. The shopping is the best, especially with Christmas in mind. Granbury is on a large lake with plenty of trees for shade in summer. You can shop for antiques, clothing of all varieties and gourmet food. Granbury, Texas.Quick Tips: Dress casual, wear good walking shoes and be prepared to have fun. When the children have tired of shopping, take them out to see the REAL Dinosaur tracks down the road a few miles.Best Way To Get Around: Drive to Granbury down scenic Highway 377, park your car and then walk. If you are in a big ru...Read More

Quote:
The hotel is right on the town Square with a great view of the historic courthouse and all of the activities on the Square. A year long redo has changed the 15 old rooms to 7 new, fancy suites. It is very important to make your reservation as far in advance as possible. All the usual credit cards honored. This hotel has all the advantages for location and historic atmosphere. Verging on 'cute' but no so much as to put men off, this is an authentic 19th century hotel with modern upgrades. Free parking. Special weekend rates. New house rules: only 2 person per suite. No pets and no children! (No poodles!) At this time breakfast is NOT included, but may be purchased at the Nutshell ...Read More

The Lodge is sort of a motel near the lake, but not on the shoreline. Three blocks from the Square for meals, shopping and shows, its location is about the nicest thing I can say about this place. Low on atmosphere, it could be anywhere, but it was clean and the rooms were large. We noticed that some of the rooms were very large. Two handicapped accessible rooms are available. Walkways between buildings are uneven, bad at night. Plenty of parking.

Having suites and a 'suitette', all with private baths, this B & B is furnished entirely with antiques. The food makes this B & B different from any other I have stayed in. Breakfast is brought to your room on a tray. A very full breakfast with all the trimmings from fresh fruit to hand made breads. No dining room service. This is a nice touch but it makes it difficult to get a 3rd cup of coffee. Don't even ask me about the hot tea! Not one of my favorates for sure. Each guest is given a coupon for a free lunch at a restaurant on the Square which is a five minute wake away. Also a coupon for a dessert at the bakery. There is a fine line between being pampered...Read More

Right smack on the Courthouse Square, nestled between antique shops, is the Nutt House, one of the nicest restaurants in this area. Certainly popular with visitors, it has long been a local favorite. A great place to watch the activities on the Square and to rest up from shopping. The food is basically Texan, the sort of food served for Sunday dinner at home. Chicken, chicken fried steak (a beef dish), some fish and very good pies for dessert. Lots of ice tea and Dr. Pepper which is made just down Highway 377 in Dublin.

This is a place where, especially during 'prime' holiday shopping times, ladies go for lunch. I've seen men eating there, but they didn't look thrilled with the salads and little sandwiches. Very nice antiques and old-time atmosphere. It can be a madhouse on Saturdays. Some antiques and dishes on display are for sale. Chicken salad sandwich plate anyone?

One more upgrade and improvement to the Nutt House Hotel has resulted in an expanded and much improved restaurant. Now operated by the famous Grady Spears. Not only has the atmosphere been dolled up, but the food is now really great. A wide selection of choices from salads and the famous 'chicken fried steak' ($13) to jazzy things like flash fried wild boar ribs ($9). Prices are very reasonable as the quality and quanity of the food is considerable. If you are not ready to use an huge amount of fat and calories, you can settle in pan roasted sea bass ($15). Desserts are heavy on sugar with burnt sugar pudding ($5) and chocolate pecan pie with white chocolate gravy ($6). And then ther...Read More

There's always a good show playing (or soon to be playing) at the remodeled and beautiful Granbury Opera House. Seating on the main floor and in the balcony. No seat is far from the stage. All performances are 'live' and frequently have 'name' talent from Hollywood and Broadway. This theater has been repaired and restored back to its appearance in the 1890's however there is now central heat and air conditioning, modern stage lighting and sound equipment. The feeling of gas lights is only spiritual. Special performances during holiday times.

The primary reason many people come to Granbury is to shop: antiques, handmade craft items, unique and period clothing, bargains, dishes, household gee-gaws and whatever else you can get in the car! Buy what you will later take to the Antiques Roadshow! Prices are generally reasonable and it's well worth a drive down from the Fort Worth - Dallas Metro area to do your holiday and special occasion shopping. Grandmother heaven! Special Christmas lighting and decorations make Granbury a very special place to shop. Nothing like it especially when the Texan weather is mild in December. Special benches and rocking chairs for husbands to rest in while wives shop!

By the time you get to Granbury from the Fort Worth-Dallas Metro area, you are grateful to be away from city life and out into the real Texas. You will pass many ranches, pastures of healthy cattle and horses and miles of wide and wide open Texas highways. Just because you are off the Interstate Highway system doesn't mean that you are on bad roads. In Texas many state highways are fine divided roads with wide shoulders, easy driving and rest areas for picnics. The further you get from the big cities, the less traffic you will have until you might wonder if the road is closed! The gentle rolling hills rise gently as you go west. Lake Granbury is a man-made lake that resulted from building a damn ac...Read More

(254) 897-4588. Open just about all year, but telephone ahead in the winter months to find out how late in the day you can come. In the summer the earlier in the day the better, as most of the animals rest during the heat of the day. There are educational programs available and some over night stays can be arranged. Discuss with your children who gets the windows that open in your car prior to getting into the park. If you have more children (and adults for that matter) than you have windows that roll down, set up a rotation system to prevent arguments when you feed the animals from your open car window, some of the creatures will push their heads inside the car to get to the goodies that you purc...Read More

I just had a VIP tour of the Granbury Courthouse, which has been named as one of the finest courthouses in Texas. This is a substantial building with two main floors, two separate basements, a third floor that is closed to the public, and a tall clock tower. It is considered an honor to be asked if you want to climb the clock tower. I was asked and declined as the heat, darkness, and ship's ladder were just too much for me to deal with.

A fire in the 1870s destroyed nearly all the old records of Hood County. When this building was planned, it was thought to be as fireproof as possible.

As you can see by the photos, I really did get a complete tour.

This is my favorite store in Granbury, as evidenced by the amount of money I've spent there. Plenty of furniture, light fixtures, ceiling fans and knick-knackery. My recent purchases included four chairs. I love the layout of this store. It is in an old stone building just about behind the Nutt House Hotel. Even with the Hood County Jail. Plenty of easy parking even if you bring your own truck to take your goodies home. Enjoy! (817) 573-5321.

This place is full of fun stuff and souvenirs. More Texas T-shirts and button shirts than I have seen elsewhere in a very long time. A lot of overly cute things, but also some very nice toys and gifts. This is a very popular stop for the people who come to Granbury by tour bus. Price range is very reasonable. The candy is good also!

This is a sweet little shop. The merchandise is really nice and high quality. This is a shop that is worth driving 50 miles for. Yes, it is visited by tourists, but most of the customers are regulars who return because of the quality and selection of the merchandise. Merchandise is elegantly arranged in a manner that is a pleasure to see. Gasp! On my late August visit the Christmas trees were up!

Recently rated 'The Best Town Square in Texas,' the Granbury Square is the first one in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Texas invested heavily in building 'proper' courthouses over 100 years ago. Each is unique. The one in Granbury, the seat of Hood County, is loaded with architectural details. The buildings surrounding the Courthouse Square are mostly restored native limestone and house an opera house, restaurants, a hotel, bed and breakfasts, shops and tea rooms. Granbury offers a very complete package for the visitor. Built with extremely thick stone walls, this courthouse is designed to prevent the loss of records from fire that happened to an earlier courth...Read More

This is a special example of early 20th Century Railroad Depots. Built in 1911, it is extremely well renovated and maintained. If you think about the fact that if you didn't take the train back in the days when this depot was very active, it was an all day trip by wagon just to get up the road to Fort Worth so it was designed as a special place.

Open Saturday and Sunday afternoons only or by appointment, this old jail is a very interesting historic stop between shopping adventures in Granbury. Built in 1885 and used until 1978, it is a small two-story building built nearly entirely of store. All the stone was quarried within 5 miles of Granbury and cut, carried and laid by the same stonemason. He cut his mark into each stone block to prove his work so that he would be paid. A real hot box in summer and freezing in winter, this jail was far from humane; but was about standard for its time. The person giving the tour is very knowledgable.
