Tioman - Island Paradise

A September 1997 trip to Tioman Island by Scots Abroad

Looking to do nothing? With maybe a little diving in a marine park in the South China Sea to see turtles, reef sharks, huge grouper and tuna, leopard sharks, and coral? Relax under the palm trees with a cocktail listening to the sound of. . . silence (corny, but true).

Quick Tips:

Pack light, as you won't need much.

Best Way To Get Around:

The only way from village to village is by boat. Everything at the resort is within walking distance.

Best Things Nearby:
The desert island -- the twin peaks of the mountain were the backdrop for South Pacific!

Best Things About the Resort:
Pools, peace and quiet, and activities available if you want it, including golf, tennis, diving, or doing nothing in comfort.

Resort Experience:
The resort was well maintained and had very friendly staff. The resort is great for children. Housekeeping comes daily. The resort has a great range of dining options from the snack bar to fine dining.

This was for a two-bedroom unit with a full kitchen. The unit was well furnished in a simple way with everything you would need. The one drawback was that the grocery store has limited availability, so it was unrealistic to expect to cook a meal at 'home' every night; however, it suited light meals and lunches for the kids before heading back out to the pool!

One of the best things about the beach at the Berjaya Resort is the lack of activity. The sand is perfect and the sea great for snorkelling. The beach slopes gently into the sea and is ideal for young children. The coral prevents big waves, so people of all ages can sit in the shallows playing and chasing little fish!

Tennis courts available at the resort and they're excellent first thing in the morning before it gets too hot or last thing at night before heading off to the beach bar.

The food is excellent and the variety is tremendous. This restaurant specialises in fine dining, typically a five-course feast with different wines to suit the courses. This would be the restaurant for the special meal of your holiday.

The course is well maintained. Your game may be occasionally interrupted by large monitor lizards crossing the course or by a bunch of monkeys laughing from the sidelines!

How to get to Tioman? You can get here a couple of ways:

Flight: Fly from the very small domestic airport in Singapore (Selatar) in a very small plane with only 10kg of luggage allowed! You can also fly from Kuala Lumpur in a asimilar size plane and luggage allowance. Flights take about 40 minutes.

Ferry: You can take a ferry from Tanah Merah in Singapore -- it takes a bit more than three hours, but you can take more luggage! From Mersing on the Malaysian East Coast, it takes less than an hour. You can get to Mersing by bus from Singapore in about three hours.

Check out this website for information on ferries and more information on the island.
