A January 2004 trip to Squaw Valley by Pattim

Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe team up to create an awe-inspiring environment and a great place to kick back and relax or ski and snowboard non-stop. Olympic Village Inn is super--no wonder you can only trade once every three years.

Olympic Village has a heated pool, so plan on the water aerobics. It is beyond amazing to be up to your neck in warm water, gently stretching, while snowflakes fall on your face. The village at the foot of the mountain is home to a number of shops, restaurants, and lounges.

Quick Tips:

Fly into Reno and drive to Squaw. Make time to stop in Truckee and visit the restorations near the railway station. You can rent any kind of equipment at Squaw, so if you don't own your own skis, poles, etc., you don't have to worry about getting what you need on the way.

Best Way To Get Around:

The ski lifts are a short walk from Olympic Village. The resort has a van that goes back and forth all day. Most resorts have some kind of transportation to the slopes, but you'll need a rental car to get from the airport and to get groceries, etc.
OVI was home to the Olympians for the 1960 Winter Olympics. The property was remodeled into units with an Alpine feel.

The larger units have a kitchen/dining area, living room, and bedroom. The living room has a wood burning fireplace and a balcony. Each unit has a view of the surrounding mountains no matter where you look.

The resort has a number of planned activities, like water aerobics in the heated swimming pool, an orientation reception, wine and cheese party, snow shoe treks, rock wall climbing and pizza for the kids, and craft activities in the village. The lobby is roomy, yet cozy, and the staff is devoted to the guests.
