San Diego Sunshine

A May 2004 trip to San Diego by lilith2003

Travelling to San Diego, we loved the golfing, shopping, zoo, and beaches from Oceanside to San Diego. We went to some great restaurants and spent our evenings meeting people from all over North America in the hot tub at our resort. It was a great vacation!

Quick Tips:

The freeways will frighten you at first, but you will get used to them.

Best Way To Get Around:

You really need a car to get around the area, particularly if you are not staying right in San Diego. Get a good map of the area and you will have no trouble navigating around. I found a flea market in San Diego very easily all by myself!

Resort Experience:
We were disappointed with the resort on a daily basis. Having stayed at Lawrence Welk Desert Oasis in Palm Springs on another occasion, we expected the same level of service. Yet the service at the Resort Villas was not near the quality of Desert Oasis. For example, the concierge at the Desert Oasis knew everything about the area, the concierge in Escondido doesn't know where any of the golf courses are! Moreover, the majority of the waitresses in the restaurant are unpleasant, to say the least; particularly so when my two 20 year olds went to eat by themselves. The suite itself was very beautiful, but it was lacking kitchen items, and the dishwasher wasn't working properly. The king size bed was very nice; however, someone needs to tell hotel owners that they do make king size fitted sheets!! It is detestable to sleep in a king size bed and have the unfitted bottom sheet wrinkling underneath you! Particularly when you do not have maid service each day!

We were told that the hotel pool and hot tub were open until midnight, yet it was cold and chained up when we went to use it. Others were told that the hot tub beside the waterslide was open until eleven, yet the gates were chained when they came to use it.

Grocery shopping is quite a distance and you can't just "run to the store" for something. The market in the resort is sorely lacking for supplies. For example, the resort provides bar-b-ques, but I couldn't get hamburger buns or buns of any sort from the market! Moreover, the bar-b-que in our area was not working the night we tried to make hamburgers.

This is one of those resorts that is considered so highly desirable that non-memers can only go once every 4 years. That, in itself, sets my expectations for the type of resort it will be and the service it will provide. I was sorely disappointed when it did not meet my expectations.
