Buggy ride through Old Montreal On a crisp spring day, nothing was more comfortable that viewing the old part of the city from under a warm throw in a horse-drawn carriage. Botanical Gardens in the sunshine: With beautiful hedges of lilacs, lakes, a Chinese tea gardens, and acres of trees on a well-groomed lawn, the gardens are a great place for a picnic or a place to wander in the afternoon sun. Enjoy a sidewalk cafe: We enjoyed crepes for breakfast at a great sidewalk cafe and later tea at a great Chinese tea house. Enjoy the view from Mont Royal: The athletic can hike and the rest can drive up the h...Read More

We ate breakfast in the outdoor seating on a sunny day. Sitting outside was great for people watching and absorbing the sunlight. There is a great bookstore next door and a farmer's market across the street. I ordered the "Victorian Pancakes" which are the thin crepes. The Breton was a large crepe with ham, asparagus, and Swiss cheese inside plus tasty homefries and a cup of tea (or coffee) all for CDN$8 (~US$6). The food and service was good. My friends had the eggs Benedict, the bacon, and cheese crepes and an omelet and were all very pleased. The cafe also specializes in teas and coffees with a wide variety that can be purchase by the pound (or bags in the case of loose ...Read More

Beauty's is a "Montreal institution", our host explained. This old-fashioned style 1950's diner located north of the Latin Quarter and Downtown at the corner of Mont Royal West and St. Urbain has been voted the "best brunch" in Montreal for many years. The restaurant was started in 1941 and still retains the 1950's decor with the chrome and plush booths. It has apparently also retained its popularity since there was a line out the door when we arrived (mostly because there is nowhere to wait inside). The booths hold two to six people and there is also a counter for people dining alone to eat. Apparently, local celebrities are often seen dining here. The menu is standa...Read More

After parking our car in the metered lot next to the science museum, we asked the first buggy driver in line what her rates were. A 30-minute tour was $35 and a 45-minute tour was $50. We chose the 30-minute tour. The driver was French-Canadian, but also spoke English. She drove us up to the square on Commune and then around the Old Part of the city pointing out sites like the Notre Dame Cathedral and old seminary as well as restaurants along with her opinion of them. The ride was quite pleasant and perfectly placed for seeing Old Montreal. The guide was well-informed, amusing, and accurately aimed her commentary toward our attention level (somewhat tired). We enjoyed the ride so much th...Read More

Getting there: Located east of Old Montreal, drive east down Sherbrooke. The main entrance to the Garden is at the corner of Pie-IX and Sherbrooke and there is parking in a lot at the garden on Sherbrooke, just past Pie-IX and if that is full there is another lot at the insectarium (part of the garden) and also for a higher price (but more likely to have free spaces) the garage at the olympic stadium which has underground parking garage spaces for CD$12 for the day. There is also a metro stop called "Pie-IX" there. What to do: Get a map in the visitor’s center. This marks not only the location of the different themed gardens but also the stop...Read More

We enjoyed a drive up to the observation point at Mont-Royal in the park of the same name. There was parking at the observation point for $1.75/hr (metered), but we only stayed for a few minutes so we didn't have to pay. The view is definitely worth the drive up. You can see a panoramic view of Montreal sprawled out before you. Especially on a sunny and clear day you really can see it all. There were also coin-operated telescopes for kids or people who want to take a closer look. This is a great activity to do on the way to something else if you are in the neighborhood. People who are more athletic can hike up to the observation point. The observation ...Read More
