Hiking in Kauai

A January 2004 trip to Kauai by Connie D.

Kauai is a hiker's paradise. Whether trekking on the Napali Coast or up in the mini Grand Canyon of Waimea, or miles of beach walking, this island is very diverse and less crowded than Maui.

Lawai is off the beaten track, but five minutes of driving to the main Poipu area. It is a great place to be if you are not into crowds, but want to be close by lots of activity. Condos are roomy and well kept.

For the ultimate sunset dining, this is the place to be. Service is well paced, allowing diners to go out on the lawn at sunset for photo ops. Windows are wide open and you are at water's edge, enjoying fine cuisine and soft ocean breezes. It doesn't get much better than this!

Attraction

Kauai has a beach for every kind of taste. Lydgate Park on the east side is wonderful for kids with a safe snorkel area, tidepools to explore, and a long beach. On the west side of the island, one can walk for miles with big surf and very few people.Tthe north side of the island is for surfers. Poipu in the south is the major sunbather hangouts.

Beach Walking
Throughout Kauai Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai has something for everyone. If you like cooler weather and less intense sun, start north at 12:00. Surfers and golfers share the north island. The more sun and heat you want the further around the island you go. At 3:00, Kaapa has very moderate weather and offers sunrises and the amenities of town with loads of shopping, Safeway and lots more restaurant choices. You are also near the airport and Lihue, the main town. For the sun worshippers, head to 6:00 and the south, where there are fewer shops and dining choices and more sun. The west side, moving to 7:00-9:00 is more rural, lots less tourist and better local feel, with the least amount of rain. Hiking can be done all over the island, and has plenty to satisfy both the novice and experienced hiker. Hiking the Waimea Canyon or Napali Coast is a great life experience. Other less strenuous hikes give great views as well. From the light house on the north east one can watch whales and lots of bird activity. The nice thing about Kauai is that you can get around 3/4 of the island in a matter of hours.
