Sun, Sand, and other Fun in Galveston

A May 2004 trip to Galveston by Corinth Linda

Quote: Galveston is a great place. We did encounter the May seaweed invasion, but that didn't stop us. There's so much to do on the island. We took day trips to NASA, Kehma, and Orange. We checked out the great beaches on Bolivar Island after taking a short ferry ride.

Best Things Nearby:Beach, Moody Gardens, the Strand, historical tours, and a trolley ride.Best Things About the Resort:Close to many activities. Had some amenities on site or nearby.Resort Experience:This is an older property that is in the process of being updated. Our unit was very nice with two bedrooms and a bathroom between. A separate bath is in the hall. There’s plenty of room in the kitchen. If you could not find a particular type of pan, the office probably had one. The staff was great. You could even check out cribs, highchairs, irons/ironing boards, and sports equipment. We had three adults and two children, and it was very comfortable. We ha...Read More

Java's

Restaurant

Java's has a relaxing atmosphere for a wonderful cup of coffee. There are two locations: one just off the main street and the other a few blocks down on the Strand. Locals frequent both. There's more activity in the larger Java's on the main street with a wider food selection. There's also night action here with no cover.

Gaido's Restaurant

This is a popular place to get well prepared seafood. It's been family owned and operated since about 1911. There is definitely family pride in this place.

The crab patties and shrimp are superb. The desserts have to be shared.

Lunch is a good time to go if you do not want to wait. The atmosphere is resort casual and you can get a great ocean view from various areas of the restaurant. The service is excellent.

Shrimp 'n Stuff

Restaurant

This local hangout sells great fresh seafood at reasonable prices. We have eaten there for more than 20 years and it is still the same. It has an outdoor area. Sometimes they can be a bit too relaxed.

I recommend the shrimp prepared any way. They have lots of shrimp. The poboy is a popular sandwich, but remember to request lettuce and tomato for a small charge if you are used to it that way. They also have new items on the menu plus a children's menu. The cole slaw is very tasty. It’s worth the trip. We eat there at least once every time we visit Galveston.

Salsas

Restaurant | "Salsa's"

Quote:
We love to come to this place and enjoy the fresh homemade Mexican fare. The waiters are attentive and yet do not make you feel their presence. The atmosphere is like being on a Mexican resort with the cool peachy colors. You may find it to be busy in the evenings so arrive early.

We always have to get a to go box. Everything we have tried was superb. The margaritas are just right.

Moody Gardens

Attraction

Before you even get close, you experience the anticipation of arriving at the three blue pyramids that rise above the gardens. Each of the pyramids has a theme. One is a rainforest with the real feeling of being in one -- there are beautiful butterflies, birds, and flora to see and discover. The science pyramid has a simulator and various space related activities. The aquarium is awesome with marine life swimming over your head and penguins diving in to cool off. You can even touch some of the marine life while a volunteer talks. The 3D IMAX is worth it. My nieces enjoyed the freshwater beach area. You may want to arrive early enough to get a chair and umbrella. This is an all-day adventure, ...Read More
