Awesome Venice

A May 2004 trip to Venice by txaggies98

Of all the places I've been, Venice is one of my favorite. It's the most unusual city you can go to because there are no cars -- just canals! This is one city you'll actually enjoy getting lost in!

Ai Mori d`Oriente Hotel
The Ai Mori d`Oriente Hotel is a wonderful hotel away from the busy San Marco area. We found the rooms and bathrooms relatively large for Europe standards, the hotel staff very helpful, and the hotel offers a nice breakfast room with a very filling breakfast.

The hotel is five minutes from the main path to the Rialto Bridge. The hotel is a couple of water bus stops away from the train station or you can walk from the train station in about 10-15 minutes.

Restaurant | "A picnic: eat well on a budget"

The best way to eat on a budget in Venice is to buy foods at the market and then find a nice peaceful site to enjoy your lunch. You can find the best pizza just on the side streets, but you can't eat in the market, so you find a nice place outside. Also don't forget the gelato, awesome ice cream in Italy that's relatively cheap!

Gondola RideBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

gondolas on the grand canal
The gondola ride is something you absolutely have to do if you go to Venice. The Gondoliers will start out at a price of 50 or 60 euros per person, but if you take the time to haggle with them and it’s a slower day, you can get it for around 30 euros a person. It is definitely worth whatever you are willing to pay.

The gondoliers wear the red sash and black-and-white outfit and they sing! Very romantic. To save money, you can get several people in a gondola, but it’s perfect for two for something romantic.

MuranoBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Glass from Murano"

When you're in Venice, be sure to take a half-day trip to see the glass-making factories on the nearby island of Murano. A waterbus from Venice to Murano will take you about 20 minutes. There are many factories so just follow the signs. The glass-blowing demonstrations take less than 10 minutes and are absolutely fascinating. After your glass-blowing demonstration, you will be shown into the glass store to buy there products, but know that there are at least 50 different glass stores on the island of Murano, so feel free to window shop!

Also, as a side note, you can get most of the same stuff on the island of Venice at a cheaper price -- you just have to make sure its says "Murano glass" if you want the real thing.
