Little Talbot Island State Park

Little Talbot Island is located 17 miles northeast of Jacksonville.

The park offers complete hook-ups for campers, tent and primitive sites also available. Camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and surfing are available. Over 5 miles of sandy undeveloped beaches (no buildings as far as you can see). Often we have been the only people on the beach.

Maritime forests, saltwater marshes and desert like dunes allow endless hours of nature study.

The ocean surf offers excellent fishing as do the tidal streams.

This recipe will feed 16 to 20 campers depending on appetites.

On an open campfire boil 2 gallons of water, add one package of Zatarran's seafood seasoning, toss in 3# of small red potatoes and a couple of onions. When it returns to a boil, add 6 ears of corn on the cob and 2# of Hillshire Farms smoked sausage, cut into serving size links. Cook until potatoes are tender. Add 2# of unpeeled shrimp, remove from fire and cover pot. Shrimp will cook in about 5 minutes. Drain water, pour into serving tray or onto newspaper lined picnic table and dig in. Very good with cocktail sauce and melted butter. Serve with a loaf of French Bread.

The masonry fort was occupied by both union and confederate troups. Many of the artillery pieces are still in place and are sometimes fired for special events.

The walls and lookouts offer great views of the Atlantic Ocean. The prisoner holding cells are frighteningly dark and secluded. The barracks and hospital seem small to have serviced so many, maybe privacy was not an issue then.
