The Beauty of Bergen

A May 2004 trip to Bergen by tamalos

Yes, it rains a lot the year here, but when the sun shines, there is no more picturesque city!

For a little city, there is more than enough to keep you entranced for a few days and then there are the fjord trips to add on! Wander around Bryggens with its beautiful medieval buildings (the museum is worth a visit) and visit the art galleries from across the lake (with a great collection of Munch paintings as well as other famous painters). Not to be missed is a fjord trip, nature at its best (Norway in a Nutshell gives you a good flavour), and branch out from there.

Quick Tips:

Alcohol is horrendously expensive, so savour each glass, or buy it in the supermarket! The Bergen Card can be good value, but watch the opening hours, particularly off season -- it can be hard fitting it all in to get best value.

Best Way To Get Around:

The Bergen Card gives you free transport around the city, but you really only need it when your legs have finally given way. The city is small and easily navigated on foot. And every corner delights, making wandering a great experience.

Restaurant

Fabulously kitted out in Persian kitsch at its best. The soups have got to be tasted to be believed - brilliantly spiced with fabulous Persian bread. A must after a hard day of walking around!
