Lone Cypress
The 17-Mile Drive runs through the 5,000 acre Del Monte Forest and the Monterey Penisula affording the traveller stunning views of the rocks and the Pacific Ocean,Lone Cypress, Seal and Bird Rocks, Fanshell Beach, Point Joe and Restless Sea.

Several of the homes on the drive are more castles than houses. Be on the lookout for deer.

Quick Tips:

Bring a picnic basket and have a quiet picnic next to the roaring sea.

Best Way To Get Around:

The 17-Mile drive is a private toll road. The toll is .50, which includes a map with sights listed.
The Shops
The Lodge is known for its hospitality, beautiful rooms and walkways and one-of-a-kind ocean setting. The central lodge has 6 exclusive guest rooms and all the other rooms and suites are located in adjacent buildings. A place to explore are the Shops. They are special but very expensive. The Golf Shop was one of my families favorties.

If you're a golfer, this is the place to stay. Without a hotel stay, your chances of playing one of the Pebble Beach courses is up to chance. Don't bet on playing without staying at the properties.

The Inn at Spanish Bay is nestled in a groves of tall Monterey pines which overlook Spanish Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The Resort is among only 44 elite dining and lodging establishments in North America to earn the Mobil 5-Star award from the Mobil Travel Guide in 1999.

I recommend two dishes. One is for breakfast and the other for dinner. The corned beef hash and poached eggs are superb. I hadn't had this dish in years and I must say this is the best I've ever had. For dinner, try the shrimp cakes. The sauce served with them is almost as good as the cakes. The dinner menu has a european/asian feel to it and the daily specials are incredible. We ate here a total for three times and I wish we had made it four. The views are amazing at Roy's.

Golf & Waves
Reservations commonly must be made a year in advance. If your not staying at one of the properties, it's almost impossible to play the course. You have to call while in the area and hope for a cancellation. I didn't play the course but my father and nephew did. Both came back speechless with awe!! We had explored the course the day before their scheduled round and I personally found it beautiful. I spent more time taking pictures then looking at the greens and putting surfaces. I think the 8th and 9th holes were my dad's favorite. Both of them were happy not putting a single ball into the Pacific!

Waves
The 17-Mile Drive is a private toll road, only one of nine in America. The idea of the drive as a tourist idea began around 1880 when guest of the Hotel Del Monte where taken via horse-drawn carriage.

The most famous sight on the drive is Lone Cypress. The age of Lone Cypress is between 200 to 300 years old. It sits alone on a rocking foundation. This is the most photographed tree in the world.

Near the most northernmost point of the drive you will find Point Joe and the Restless Sea. Here at Restless Seas, the ocean currents collide with underwater rocks. This makes the ocean spray explode upward even on the calmest of days.

Walk up and enjoy one of the provided binoculars at Bird Rock and take a look at a herd of sea lions and hundreds and hundreds of birds.

If you come in the spring, you’re sure to see the harbor seals returning to Fanshell Beach to bear their pups. Walk this beautiful beach and marvel at it's pure white sand.

Cypress Point has spectacular views and the best place to get a glimpse of the harbor seals. Also visible on clear days is the Point Sur Lighthouse, which is over 20 miles away.

Some of the best sights are man-made - the homes, the Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Inn at Spanish Bay.
