Honeymoon in Fiji

A May 2004 trip to Nadi by lah

For our honeymoon, we spent 10 days in Fiji at a resort in the outer Mamanuca Islands called Tokoriki Island Resort. For us, this was the best experience in terms of solitude, privacy, gorgeous beaches, unbelievable sunsets, and no children! On our last day, we roamed around Nadi.

Best Things About the Resort:
Pure solitude, small occupancy - only about 25-30 "bures" (1 BR huts), no children policy.

Resort Experience:
This resort is the only resort on the island. Each deluxe beach bure has a front entrance on the main path and a back door which leads out to the ocean - only about 100 feet away. Everyone gets their own hammock slung between two palm trees and two lounge chairs. The point of the stay here is to enjoy the beach and the activities they offer daily. The pool is small, but there are 3 different snorkeling trips offered weekly and a PADI certified dive center. There are also boat trips to nearby islands. The staff is overwhelmingly friendly.

Attraction

The water in Fiji all seems to be crystal clear. Near Tokoriki there are numerous reefs literally teeming with all varieties of fish - particularly at one reef named the "7 Sister Reef". Snorkeling is not something to be missed during a stay in the Mamanuca Island chain!

For the usual souvenirs, Jack's is the best bargain with the widest selection. Even local villages buy from Jack's to sell to tourists who stay on the more isolated islands. Jack's even goes to the trouble to have handicrafters making items in the store for shoppers to watch - carving, basketweaving, T-shirt art, etc. The best treat is, if someone loves something you buy at Jack's, you can likely find a duplicate at the online store!

Part of Raymond Burr's former estate, Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a beautiful testament to the beauty of nature. All different varieties of orchid are on display as well as many types of palm trees and other tropic plants - native and introduced. The garden also features a picnic area as well as a non-strenuous hike area in the shaded forest. Admission even comes with free tropical juice beverages when you finish your tour! While the drive to the garden is a rocky dirt road turn-off from the highway, it's worth the effort!!
