This hotel is indeed a national treasure, with superb Art Nouveau and Art Deco touches both inside and out. The staff is attentive and the bar a delight, lined with celebrity pictures taken in the bar.

Our room was large, with views over the Liedesplein, but we weren't disturbed by the trams.

I wouldn't bother with the hotel breakfast, which is a bit overpriced at €15, particularly as it's only a 15-minute walk to the pancake shops at the flower market.

This is a classic Hard Rock Cafe overlooking a canal and close to the major museums. The key with Hard Rocks is that you know exactly what you're going to get -- good food, good beer, and good music -- anywhere in the world. That works for me.

The Flower Market is a great place to just mooch. There are about 20 stalls selling plants and flowers, ranging from (when we visited) tulips to large exotic tropical blooms. The pancake shops along the bank are great for breakfast, too.
