You can get there by bus from the Gold Coast or hire a car -- it is about 20 minutes to the heart of the mountains. There are plenty of things to do, like go on rainforest walk or visit the local arts and crafts markets.
The cost of accommodation is very reasonable at about $40 a night. Meals and cafes are very inexpensive, so there is more time and money to spend on the markets and local handicrafts.
