This was our first trip to Las Vegas for any length of time. We had passed through before and even stayed overnight once, but never had the chance to fully explore or experience this place until this trip. As I drove into LV on a Saturday afternoon looking for our hotel, I was nearly overwhelmed by the spectacle of the crowds on the street corners and the traffic trying to navigate through these pedestrians, all the while marveling at sights of the hotels along the 'Strip'. Each of these mega resorts is fantastic as they take you into their own unique world. Another part of Las Vegas that is not to be missed is the Fremont Street Experience. This is the original 'downtown' Las Ve...Read More

Carriage House

The Carriage House was a wonderful place to stay. It is a high-rise building with nine floors, the ninth housing an Italian restaurant. It had a swimming pool and ample parking, which was convenient to the complex. Although it wasn't fancy or opulent by Las Vegas standards, it was very clean with a pleasing atmosphere about it. The staff were knowledgeable about the area and pleasant to deal with. There aren't activities on site other than the swimming pool and restaurant, but with the LV strip only a couple of blocks away, who cares?! I would say that if you have children, this place may be a bit boring for them as there is no game room or activity center. There is a lounge with a TV, pape...Read More

Roundtable Buffet at the Excalibar

Restaurant | "Round Table Buffet"

The Round Table Buffet was a true feast for the palate and the eyes. We walked right in with no waiting and before us was enough food to feed the king and his army. We hoisted plates that must have been over 12" in diameter. The evening buffet featured prime rib and shrimp to go along with all the other usual fare of salads, meats, vegetables, sides, bread and rolls, drinks, and desserts. There was so much to eat and so little time!! I did my best, but I couldn't find enough room for a second round. Agh! The food was good but not spectacular. The price was right though and I would eat here again for a good old-fashioned meat-and-potatoes type of menu. The decor is, of course,...Read More

Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park Photo, Overton, Nevada

The Valley of Fire State Park is a natural wonder to behold. It is located about an hour north and east of Las Vegas. The first thing you notice about this place is the color of the rock formations. They are, as the name implies, crimson like fire. As you enter the park, you realize that this is about as far from Las Vegas as you can get. There is no neon here, no ringing slot machines, and no pedestrian traffic. Even though the strip is only about 60 miles away, this park is centuries away from that. It is still original and undeveloped except for the roads upon which you drive. The only evidence of man (besides the roads and picnic areas) are the petroglyphs, which can be found among ...Read More

Shopping at the Resorts

Story/Tip

Normally I wouldn't consider shopping one of my favorite activities while on vacation. But shopping at the resort hotels on the Las Vegas strip is not your ordinary shopping experience. To be more precise, window-shopping in these locations is a treat in itself as you can explore a virtual reality that could only exist in Las Vegas. We did not visit every hotel resort on the strip, but the ones we did visit were a visual adventure. Our first stop was at the Aladdin Hotel’s shopping area called the Desert Passage. This is a mall that is designed to look like a bazaar from the Middle East. Every 15 minutes, there is an area set aside inside this mall that has a thunderstorm ...Read More

When one thinks of Las Vegas, one thinks of the Las Vegas strip and the glamour of the mega hotels. However, there are some other interesting places that tend to be overlooked, such as the museums in and around Las Vegas. We visited the natural history museum as a break from the LV strip and we found it to be a nice change from the glitz of LV. They had three or four distinct galleries with wildlife exhibits. One of the first you encounter is the dinosaur exhibit, which features several animatronic dinos roaring and posturing at each other. Another gallery featured animals of Africa, while yet another featured the wildlife of the local region. There was also an exhibit featuring sea life,...Read More
