Life's a Beach

An April 2004 trip to Port Aransas by Joy, Jr.

Quote: Port Aransas is great for swimming, fishing, birding, and eating. It's close enough to Corpus Christi for day trips. There's lots to do here.

Life's a Beach

Overview

Quote:
There's plenty of beach in Port Aransas, miles of it. There's also bird watching, fishing, dolphin watching, and a ship for gambling. There are lots of shops with beachwear, T-shirts, surfboards, etc. Dining opportunites are endless! Corpus Christi is close enough for a day trip or two.

Quick Tips:

Eat to your heart's content, as there are some great places. There is a wonderful candy shop--Winton's Candies--with fresh fudge and caramel. Don't miss the live rattlesnake at the back of the shop.

Best Way To Get Around:

You definitely need a vehicle, but I'll bet this place is jammed in summer.

However, there are some fixable maintenance problems: access to the unit hot tub is dangerous; the complex’s hot tub has not functioned for some time; the vinyl flooring in bathroom is peeling; the blinds did not function; and the dishwasher was out of commission. Bufatso's Pizza

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a charming, no frills pizza joint. There about four tables inside with extra seating out front and in the rear.

The pizza crust is the best I've had in years--thin on the bottom with fat edges--with lots of toppings. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. They also serve calzones, strombolis, and salads.

Although the restaurant appears small on entering, there is a second floor.

There are wonderful selections from the menu, daily specials, and a salad/soup bar. Our meals were delicious and well-prepared, and the portions were large. It's great for families. Beer and wine are available. My best meal on vacation was here!

This place is bviously a local favorite. The friendly owners serve good barbecue, including beef, pork, chicken, and sausage. The homemade fries are great, peels and all. We loved this spot for lunch.

A meal at this place could get expensive, as items on the menu board are higher than the pasta dishes on the menu, which are very reasonable, taste fresh, and have good flavor. And there's lots of it! I made two meals out of my dish.

There is outdoor dining. In-season, calling ahead may be a good idea.

Winton's Candies

Story/Tip

Quote:
Located on S. Alister in Port Aransas, this is a must see (and experience) candy store. There were bins and bins of all kinds of candy, some I haven't seen since I was a kid. The freshly-made caramel with pecans is to die for. There is also freshly-made fudge that looked wonderful, but we were hung up on the caramel.

MUST SEE: The live rattlesnake at the back of the shop. And I do mean LIVE. Have no fear, however, it is in a locked glass cage.

We loved this little shop so much that we made a second trip to restock. Enjoy.
